Well if Canon was to release a 5D Equivalent APS-C 1.6 Camera that situation would change would you not agree.
A true compeditor to the D200 is needed.
When that happens things will look very different.
And as many(75% of ) semi-pro’s/amateurs will never spend 5k on a 1dMk2 I dont think its a fair comparison to make.
I was speaking from the point of view of say a D20/30 or a 10d vs D100/D70/d200 Where my point of Nikon being lacking in lenses but being far superior in cameras. And in reality comparing full frame to crop will never be a fair comparison I think youll agree?

When that happens things will look very different.I can’t see it happening. Canon have invested heavily into the FF “ideal”, spending massive amounts of money not just building up FF as the way to go, but pretty much rubbishing the idea of smaller sensors

I completely disagree with this too. The semi pro/enthusiast market is just huge and we’re spending more and more each year. I’m a prime example.. in 2 years I have invested well in excess of 15K, perhaps even 20K on camera equipment. Everyone starts out small, but if the bug bites, then amateurs tend to spend, spend, spend. How many people here have spent over 1K on a lens? The friends I know that are into photography have all spent huge money on equipment, so 5K isn’t the massive figure it once was.

I agree with you there :D
BurtParticipantTo get back to the original topic of the thread, I am not surprised by Nikons announcement at all. Sony are getting into the game with a 10mp SLR so it would seem that Nikon are finally getting their marketing together and launching a pre-emptive strike! Its not going to compete really with the D200 which is really closer to a pro model , i would guess that its a D70 replacement. Canon seem to be asleep at the helm on this one! They are probably busy with increasing megapixels on the 1DSM3 so their wideangles will look even mushier. :D

Na Id disagree there Im sorry.
Many will go as far as 4-5k on body and lens, Very few will have 15k over 2 years man. Thats why the 5D is at a perfect price point.
We dont all have as much cash as you mate :)
I run my own IT business, I make decent cash when I have contracts and I know Id never spend that. And I think most people not earning a decent percentage of their living from Photography wouldnt either!!masteroftherealmParticipantBurt wrote:

Yeah saw that sony.
Looks very impressive for the price Imust say.And yeah I must say I shot on Ali’s D200 and it was very very nice!!
Hmmm *goes off to buy a EOS to FMount adaptor – Now everyones happy!! :D
BurtParticipantNow thats a whole other argument!!!
What I need is an Fmount to Fmount adaptor and get rid of the EOS bit altogether :P
nolongerParticipantUpdate: The new Nikon camera is the D80. Pics available here. Still no details on it though.
shrapnelMemberFORECAST
The Nikon D80 will be announced on August 9th, 2006.
It’s a 10 MP update of the D70s.
SPECIFICATIONS
It’s almost identical to the D70s in most regards except:
10 Megapixels, up from 6.
2.5″ LCD, up from 2.0″
4.5 FPS, up from 3.
1/250 sync speed, down from 1/500.
Top panel illumination now switched on by twisting the power button, just like D200, D2X, etc. The D70 had a separate button. The D80 is an improvement.
Slight rearrangement of buttons on rear.
Dedicated AF selection button on top of camera, a big improvement from D70 which required a menu to select between AF-S or AF-C.
masteroftherealmParticipantHmmm these seem to originate from Ken Rockwell so Id be a bit dubious to those specs so far.
Ill wait and see.BurtParticipantYe you gotta love those Ken Rockwell reviews, the most indept reviews of camera gear you can find on the web and the amazing thing is he can do it before the equipment is even manufactured. Now that is impressive :D
masteroftherealmParticipantmasteroftherealmParticipantThread resurrection =)
Ciaran: Ah the wise words you spoke, I got to 5k, I got to 10k I got to 20k so much for the assumation that such figures were beyond me. And I am even considering spending 5.5k on a single lens (Nikon 200mm F2 VR, currently on its way for a try from NPS)
3 years later, I am earning approx 50-70% of my income from photography and recently I have made the decision to switch from a Canon system back to a Nikon system. Coming from a 1ds III and a 1d II with a selection of glass to a D3 and a selection of glass NPS have made the transition very easy and were more helpful to me than CPS ever were even in the US. So I decided to make the switch.
Reasons: Nikon CLS. Nikon NPS. And the D3. Although I have purchaced a D2H and a D2xs as backup bodies and I think they are just lovely to shoot on. Funny how things come full circle. C’est la vie.
Edit: And I still hate My Rockwell :P
ciaranParticipantI’m not religious… but now I believe in ressurection
