Hi Folks,
I got a Hoya R72 IR Filter so I went out today to take a few practise shots to have some images to experiment with in PS. However if you look at the shot I have posted below you will see that the foliage is black, yet when I look at tutorials te starting image they have always has the foliage white.
What am I doing wrong here.
stephenMemberhi markst, i think you have to go into photoshop, { camera raw} and finish it off their. Go to u-tube and you”ll get all the info you need their.
IsabellaParticipanthi mark,
the IR effect comes from the infrared part of the light spectrum. this is reflected off of objects in different ways and in different quantities to the visible spectrum. it comes from the sun and also from some artificial light sources (though I’ve never tested so i dunno much about them, i know you can get IR filter for flash. id imagine digital exposure times under incandescent bulbs to be very slow indeed but give it a go anyway for the fun of it.)
an area or object in shadow will still be dark and in shadow, this image would have been a silhouette filter or no.
anyway, keeping it simple you will get the strongest IR effect shooting with your back to the sun, that is how you get the sky to come out its blackest. you need good sunlight, best is a sunny morning or evening as there is more infrared light about, but don’t let that stop you from using it midday. an overcast day will likely give you a fairly normal looking black and white image, with little or no evidence of infrared apart from a very slow shutter speed.
with digital you also want to be shooting in RAW and drop out the saturation to get the B+W (at least thats how i do it anyway)
hope this is useful
markst33ParticipantThanks Isabella. I’ll have another go if we ever get another sunny day in this country :)
