Newbie and novice combined

Hi. Another newbie, in every sense. I like taking photos and have been through a couple of compact digital cameras but I’ve just had a present of a Nikon D40X an 2 lenses. It has all the automatic options but I desperately want to learn about metering shutter speed etc – all just terms to me at present. All ‘local’ classes are miles away (30-40) and full up. Any hints on reading material – I am a fast learner but I haven’t a clue where to start. I love landscapes and urban images, especially angles, spirals and tunnels.

    Welcome to the site esmie-

There’s never been a better time to be a fast learner-
You can access a lifetime’s experience of photography in just a few mouse clicks-
    well, almost-

Hope to see some pix soon-

    Welcome to the site Esmie.

The way to learn – Trial & Error…and plenty of it but the important thing is to keep trying. There’s plenty of amateur pros here to point you in the right direction on the technicalities.

Might I also suggest looking for a DVD or Video of your camera and how it works. I got one for mine and find it invaluable to throw on to learn how to use it – I find something new every time.

Welcome Esmie, your first book to read is the D40 Manual!! might sound a bit obvious, but unless you know what all the buttons ,switch’s are for and where they are.You will find it a struggle to relate to any advice given. The following two books are an excellent read and I found them very useful (and I am not a newbie) and they were recommended on here,(Books section)

    Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson
Learning To See Creatively by Bryan Peterson

The first is without doubt the easiest and most valuable book I have read to date.

Thank you John. I am a woman, therefore I do read the manual! But you are the first of the many people I have asked to actually recommend a book. It’s all very well knowing which buttons to press but you have to know when you want to press them, if you know what I mean. Searching ebay and Amazon as we speak. Thanks again

I think I got those two books from Amazon. Never go out shooting without your manual also.I remember when I got my Canon 33 and was out shooting landscapes and when i pressed the shutter button it fired off 3 shots per time.Could not figure out what was happening. Until i got home and took out the manual to find i had switched over the button to continuous firing .while taking it out of the bag. Its ok in the digital world but I must have shot 4 rolls of slides that day to get my 36 exposures ( 4 of everything) Lesson learned.

    Hi Esmie,

As a fairly recent member myself I would like to say welcome and confirm what has been said by others about reading the manual and related books.

Here are some books I would recommend for your camera, I have used the D70 and D200 versions of these and found them very helpful. In the case of the Simon Stafford book this is about the same size (dimensions) as your Manual and would fit easily in a camera bag, while the other 2 are a bit bigger. All 3 are listed on Amazon.

There is another Nicon D40 Book from Magic Lantern by Lark Books.
    Amazon Link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Lantern-Guides-Nikon-D40x/dp/1600592562/ref=sr_1_3/202-6371970-6767820?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188556253&sr=1-3

It would appear some of these have not yet been published but are due for release soon.

    Hope this is of help.

    Regards,
    Declan
