Iv enrolled on a 5 week photography course over 5 eves (despite reading loads of free online info) 150€.

Anyone recommend whats the best camera and amy other equipment to buy for me..I did visit a camera shop but the girl was hopeless, reading out of the box…iv looked at argos.ie n other websites but unsure…also where does one gets the photographs printed….

iv a budget of 1k to get everything up and running. Insurance company approx €150. This will b a small business id imagine as im rural enough…

As 111 people read my posts im hoping anyone can offer me advice…even go for it…

Iv spent approx. 1k so far, did a few family occasions and public events, got plenty use of my nikon d3200 etc. Even a photograph published in a magazine corncerning my other business (I took this photograph as part of an assignment on my course) and submitted it…also produced a personalised photo card which looked v well n wud be something id b interested in..

have business cards on vista, rang about insurance €135, revenue just add in extra profit, no additional prsi etc..

is there anything im missing…my main aim is to cover my costs for insurance so anything over that bonus…

Forgive me if I’m somewhat blunt. I think you probably haven’t had any replies because photographers will find it hard to take serious when someone who is completely new to photography and straight away you are going into the photography business. There have been quite alot of people who think that buying a camera makes you a photographer when that’s not at all the case. It unfortunately will take more than 5 evenings of a photography course to give you all the technical skills required imho. On the plus side you say you have been running a business in another area so you probably have the required business know how which in many ways is more important.

Having a small budget of 1k to get up and running seems low in my opinion (I don’t do photography for a living btw).
Are you going to have a studio? What are you doing for lighting the subjects? I assume the insurance is public liability insurance?
How are you going to advertise? etc…

What insurance? Camera gear insurance? Public Liability Insurance? Professional Indemnity insurance? Legal cover insurance? You need all of those if you are shooting on contract for clients.

PL – to cover you against accidents (someone gets hurt in your studio, your camera falls on someone, you damage property on a client’s premises, etc)
PI – to cover you against not being able to provide exactly what the client wants (due to camera failure, memory card failure, client disappointment in quality, etc)
Legal cover – to cover your legal costs if someone takes a case against you
    Camera gear insurance – Obvious.

So, what else – have you considered equipment failure? Two cameras, multiple lenses, flash units/lights, memory cards, batteries, etc.

Sure, go for it, but just know that there are lots of potential pitfalls.

Thanks for the replies, yes, I can appreciate how insulting i would appear to your profession..I did tell my younger sibling of my plan last yr n what a laugh was had, especially after that waterford whisper piece came out but now changed opinion n saying go for it after effort im putting in.,im completely self employed n I was looking for a business that will give me a different work setting, iv other hobbies..,iv v rural so things work different here and for me it would be about breaking even not making money to live off it…the second camera i need to look at however a photographer last yr did a family party n she only one camera, id sussed her out, it was a same sized as my d3200 but canon, €100 (handy money I thought at time n she had no insurance etc, just do people favours she said, as I said this rural area, she fb page, using business name not registered with cro etc)..

My house has a separate work room/office/meeting area already n iv a sunroom that my evening course photographer said great n would suit newborn photography…

im aware of insurance specifics as iv it for my other business but unfortunately need separate policy, 135 I was quoted..normally im type just go ahead but finding this so daunting…

Go for it, nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.

start small, word of mouth type of thing,do a few free sessions for friends and build up a portfolio and improve your skills.

best of luck, hope it works out for you.
    Michael.
