Hi everyone. We are just celebrating the birth of our beautiful baby girl and was wondering if there were any ideas to get a good portrait done. I`d like to to do black and white in a soft focus sort of thing but i would welcome advice. I recently purchased Photoshop elements 8 (dare i say such blasphemous things to the purists!), so any detailing or tweaking that would enhance an amateur`s shot would also be welcome…. Yours; A Proud Dad
Forget about photoshop for the moment. If the photo is crap then nothing will fix it!!
If you have remote lights then you can light the portrait properly. If not, then do the portrait near a large window where you have natural light., You can use a reflector to eliminate shadows. If you haven’t got a reflector then make one with tinfoil and a piece of cardboard. Get the lighting and exposure right and there will be no need for Photoshop.
if you have an SLR and you don’t already have a 50mm 1.8 Lens then I would go out and get one as congratulations to yourself. You can get one new for approx 130-150 or you can pick one up second hand. With a 50 1.8 you will be able to get great shots indoors with available light – 99% of my pictures of my daughter are taken with this lens.
Get used to using you camera in aperature priotiry mode and open then lens up to get a shallow depth of field and you will be amazed at the picrutres you are getting.
its the best photographic investment that I have ever made.
