Newlyn, in Cornwall
-
jb7Participant
If Ever
you find yourself in the English Channel,
without fuel, or power, or modern navigation aids,
having been at sea for three days,
and having already rounded Land’s End,
then I can heartily recommend Newlyn, in Cornwall.A fishing port with all its boats on the quay,
Newlyn is a part of England that bears a deep resentment
to the EC Common Fisheries policy.Which manifested itself later in the frozen scampi and chips dinner
in a pub that wouldn’t be out of place in Royston Vasey.I suppose I’m not being entirely fair;
its a pretty little place (in parts),
though it doesn’t have the charm of St. Ives or Newquay. But we were glad to be able to tie up beside the fishing boats before nightfall,
and to find someone to repair our electrics next morning,
before heading on to Plymouth.Apologies for going on,
but I’m trying to justify putting this one in the travel section.
I suppose you don’t always have to arrive on a coach from the airport. Thanks for looking-

Jay KingParticipantHey… Nice justification for travel section… Just about got you in there ;)
I’m not too sure about this one. The light is a bit tooo distracting and I couldn’t quite make out the Penzance boat for a bit… had to search around to find whether it was the bow or stern I was looking at. (I initially thought the name was on the front right side of the boat)
What I do like is all the ropes and cables and the way they throw your eye left and right of the image… the letterbox crop lends itself to the image perfectly for this.
Don’t know if it’s a dust bunny or a ghost image… but there is something just to the left and middle of the mast(s) on the extreme right.

jb7ParticipantThanks Jay-
No bunnies, just persistent drizzle and a 19mm (eq)-
Impossible to avoid the drops,
and they register on the front element-I suppose I could get rid of it,
maybe someday-for now, it reminds me of the weather that night.

PeteTheBlokeMemberOh wow! I lived in Penzance for my whole teenage. Some of my happiest moments were spent in Newlyn and some of my best friends were from there (give or take a mile). Haven’t been back for at least 15 years.
As for the photo.. I’m not sure. I feel the big spotlight banjaxed a good shot. I like the light it throws on the trawler cabin, but not the light itself.
Sure takes me back, though. I have lots of memories from this place.
jb7ParticipantThe light doesn’t bother me that much-
it wouldn’t have been a picture at all without it-Here’s a night and day view to bring you back again-
Thats about all I have-

PeteTheBlokeMemberThanks JB. I sometimes see the odd boat in Donegal with ‘PZ’ on it, and it always takes me straight down memory lane: all-night poker sessions with trawlermen; the smell of the fish-market; fat trout in the Coombe river; walking girls home along the promenade…. Oops, this is off-topic… er … lovely photos… nice exposure
