Was mucking about with an off camera flash cord I got off eBay for 50p and a bunch of grapes… and came up with this… which I quite like… but it’s easy to think that way when it’s one of your own.

I think this is a really nice picture and very well taken and processed. Really caught a moment here. His dark eyes, face and the way he is looking at you is great. Those scrubber type things :-) nicely finish’s off the picture. a good one well done

Pure fluke really.. I mean 1/25th of a sec holding the camera with one hand (the dodgy arm) and the flash in the other… not sure how I managed it. I usually refuse to shoot any slower than 1/100th hand held.

Got this flash… trying to get my head around it… but I really don’t have a clue… just bounce it off something and hope for the best.

    Thanks again.

Very cute your little boy, must get that from his mum *sniff*

Seriously, this is very good, love the eye contact and the little catchlights, there is a little bit of shadow under the eyes I think maybe a reflector would have lifted this.
Have you added a little bit of grain in PS? Seems to have a bit of texture to it… Very nice I think.

    Ta everyone!

    Jess:

Yep… he looks a lot like Mammy dearest!

The grain is from shooting ISO800 on the 400D… not the best camera noise wise past ISO400… but it was something I was aware of and I agree it sorta works here nicely.

Reflector… yep another thing on my wishlist… will have to be getting an assistant soon as well (Wonka maybe?).

    Thanks again.

Sweets and Toys are always a good incentive to get them to pose Cathal…

Then past the age of 7-8 (when kids realize that communion money rocks) then cash is the only good incentive!!!

Good to take plenty of shots of the kids… you’ll wake up someday and they’ll be all grown up so t’is nice to have some memories.

OK, you can critique this, but it works very well, so no point!

I think this is excellent – nicely composed within the frame and a great expression…

Pure fluke really.. I mean 1/25th of a sec holding the camera with one hand (the dodgy arm) and the flash in the other… not sure how I managed it. I usually refuse to shoot any slower than 1/100th hand held.

I’m trying to learn about flash myself at the moment but I do find you can shoot at much lower speeds (handheld even) while using a flash on your subject. I think* because the light only falls on the subject for a fraction of the time the mirror/curtains are open and thus it remains sharp. Lower speeds will affect the ambient light more than the subject.

    * Experts here please correct me!!!

Yep, flash is supposed to aid in “freezing” the subject… but I’m no expert on this.

I’ve ready a few flash tutorials… but I’m still left dumbfounded as to how people decide what settings are suitable for whatever situation.

I’d like to do a course in flash and lighting and some stage… but for now it’s all trial and error.
