Nic in the grass

Great capture Sean. I think the clouds in the background really help this image and the lighting looks well balanced (at least on my crappy work monitor).
I’ve often wondered about the value of those small softboxes and would they be worth the hassle of setting up and this image might just have changed my mind. I don’t particularly like the Lastolite one (it looks and feels a bit flimsy) so I’m looking for alternatives.
BTW, Nicola looks lovely too!
RobMemberI like this a lot, even more for the position you chose to shoot from than
the lighting – which is fantastic by the way. Great shadow detail and really
natural tones overall. I was about to mention the watch but then I saw your
footnote… :)
Terrific shot, both in lighting and aspect.Rob.
seanmcfotoMemberThanks lads.
I went low with the viewpoint to use the grass as foreground and the sky as background. I was running at or close to sync speed for most of the session, so my aperture was dictated by this.jb7ParticipantseanmcfotoMemberI’ll post some in a new post when I get some processing done. The Galway Arts Festival has kicked off so I’m going to be very busy with work for the next few weeks.
SeanAllinthemindParticipantLovely Sean,
Do you have the flash on a tripod here? the shadow indicates that it is off-camera. Which soft-box are you using? It’s something that has been in my mind for a while, I tried umbrellas with off-camera speedlights but it blew over, hehe.
Only other comment is her halter-neck, there are a “Confusion” of straps.
Looking forward to seeing more.

It’s on a monopod. Normally I’d have it on a stand, but I forgot to bring it home. This location is a the back of the green in our apartment complex.

I’m may order one right away (although there’s another 64% to factor in for shipping and VAT *gulp*). Just one thing – did you get the L-bracket with it or was that a separate item you had to buy?
So many photographers moan when models bring a chaperon with them. My take on it is that if it makes the model more comfortable, then that makes for a better shoot and besides, it’s great to be able to say to them “Here, make yourself useful, hold this reflector/flash/whatever like that…”
seanmcfotoMemberIt includes the bracket. Chimera sell the bracket only for nearly $60 on B&H so it’s a bargain. Look around the site, Thorsten, there may be other things to get too in the same package. I got 2 which helped with price per item inc shipping. I should’ve got a camera bracket at the time too.
paperdollParticipantso for the uneducated…this is a softbox which fits over your flash unit, sb800 or whatever?
my credit card is burning a hole in my pocket… :lol:is it complicated to set up? are there any other ‘parts’ needed, apart from the softbox and the flash..
seanmcfotoMemberNope it’s pretty easy in fact.
Go to my flickr page and you’ll see the softbox bits about 1/2 way down:
