I am thinking about saving up for the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 (don’t tell the wife) and I was wondering what peoples opinions on it are ? The lens I use the most would be my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 and I was wondering if the (expensive) step up here would result in an appreciable improvement in image quality.
I do a lot of portrait stuff and I usually use my 50mm for this. I have a D7000 body. If I am doing landscapes I would use my kit 18-55mm which I got with my D50 all those years ago. So would the 24-70 enable me to sell my 18-55 and my 50mm as it would effectively replace both those lenses.
I have always been led to believe that a prime lens will always be superior to a zoom lens but as the 24-70 is 10 times the price of a 50mm, that must say something.
Bit of a difference between the 18 and 24 though. If I was you I’d take a look at your exif data perhaps you can filter on it with whatever software you’re using and see if you take many photos wider than 24mm. A 50mm is always handy to have though….
