i have a sigma 70-300 apo and im thinking of getting the Nikkon 70-300 VR main reason i dont realy like the sima 70-300 i can pick a new one up on ebay for less than 250 so if i sell the sigma one im on to a winner well i recon i am. i was also thinking of the 18-200 VR either one but im not sure wich one cost doesnt bother me at all once i know im getting a Good lens.
MarkKeymasterWhat do you intend on using the lens for ? The 18-200 will be useful for landscape whereas
the 70-300 will be restricted to the 70mm end. So depends on what you’re going to use the
lens for…Both are meant to be very good lenses. The Nikon 70-300 is a large improvement on its previous non-VR version.
spudMemberwell i have the stock 18-135 and the sigma 10-20 so landscape is covered. as for what i will use it for weill i like Birds and small animals so i was thinking it would coming handy for this.
pete4130MemberI’ve got a 70-300 VR I’m thinking of selling. Trying to fund the purchase of a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR. I’ve already got the Sigma 70-200 2.8 which is really good, but I want to slowly try to switch everything over to Nikon. At the minute the 2 lenses are covering 70-200 so having both of them is a waste.
The 70-300 is a good lens. I’ve shot it handheld on a D200 at 300mm (450mm equivelant) at 1/10th second with VR on and it was acceptable. It’s not too heavy either, compared to the 70-200 2.8’s. PM me if your interested.

Overall, he’s really happy… the only drawback is the aperture/ slow focusing.
ExpresbroParticipantI post occasion ally on a Nikon Forum and the guys there..most of them pretty serious users..all seem to rate the 18-200VR as a great everyday walk around lens.
Might even replace my own 18-135mm with it when funds allow.
AllinthemindParticipantThe 18-200 can be a little on the soft side, but a great range for a walkabout lens. The 70-300VR will be better IQ (and also ful-frame coverage).

ossie13ParticipantI have the 18-200VR and its a great lens to leave on the camera, I have no complaints although I agree the AF can be slow, but the range is ideal with the 18mm covering landscape up to a respectable 200mm tele!! I have not used the 70-300VR but have read some good write ups and is on my “Santa” list!!
Cheers Steve
