I have an almost new… probably less than 100 shots 80-400mm lens

Specs: Nikon Zoom Telephoto AF VR Zoom Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Autofocus Lens (Vibration Reduction)

The VR at the 400mm focal length works really well.

The price new in Berminghams is ?,1699
    Price in Conns is ?1,792
Price in B&H (US) is $1,429.95 or the imported gray market is $1,279.95

Any reasonable offer considered.. at the moment it’s sitting on a shelf in it’s pouch gathering dust.

Someone has contacted me asking me for a physical and performance comparison between the 80-400mm and 70-200mm.. so here goes (I’ll probably lose a sale :) ) Basically in comparison to it’s little brother, the 70-200mm, it really doesn’t compare. But then again, which other lens in the Nikon line up does?

It’s slower, not as fast to focus and not as sharp. So if you’re interested in a zoom lens with performance around the 70-200mm mark, this is definitely not the lens for you.

    But on the upside :)

It’s not really a people lens, but if you’re looking for a zoom on the longer end, it has a pretty good reach. Results wise, it’s adequately sharp and until I bought it’s little brother, would have given it top marks in that category. It’s fully sharp, even in the corners up to about 300mm but falls off a little after that.

The VR works great and really does give you 3 stops, which makes up for the fact it’s slow – assuming of course you’re shooting stationary subjects.

It’s slower to focus than the 70-200, but I’ve never had it hunt in and out on the D2X. I have noticed this behaviour on the D200. But when it has locked focus, it can continually track very easily. There’s also a focus limiter to help speed up focus.

Physically, the 70-200mm weight a little bit more (1,470g vs 1,360g) although you don’t really notice this when using one above the other.

    Photos

Here are some photos of the two lenses side by side. No comments on the poor photography please… I’m not a product photographer ;)

With the lens hoods on and reversed for storage, the 80-400mm looks like a little short stubby lens and is considerably shorter than the 70-200mm

Taking the lens hoods off, you can see the size of both of them side by side. The 80-400mm is at minimum zoom (80mm)

At full zoom the 80-400mm shades it slightly in terms of length.

And finally, with the lens hoods on.

Here are some shots I took with this lens at the 400mm end
