Nikon D200 -anybody out there got one and an opinion on it

Hi there. I am thinking of trading up from my D50 and I am veering towards the D200 as it is in my price range if I can get it 2nd hand. Already had a look at it in Berminghams here in Dublin. I am wondering if there is anybody out there in photographyirelandWorld who has this model that could give me their honest opinions on it. The best things about it, the worst things, problems they encountered etc.

Looking forward to hearing from you all.

We discussed it way back when: https://www.photographyireland.net/viewtopic.php?t=164 My thoughts of the camera are fairly well summed up there. I think high iso might not be up to your D50 standards if that’s important to you but for low iso stuff its superb.

Great piece of equipment! No problems with it at all, I have it now for 2 years.

I had one for about a year and it was a superb camera. It took great pictures in automatic mode but pretty well everything on it can be overridden through either a button or the menus for more advanced use. All the controls are in sensible places and are easy to use.

I sold it only to upgrade to a D300 under the mistaken belief that it would help me take better pictures. I should have kept the D200 and used the money to go on a photography course instead :)

    Hi Mark,

Have the same setup as you mention, a D50 which I use for travel & a D200 for everything else.

D50 was my main camera for about 2 years, before I upgraded to the D200 about 18 months ago. At the time I was in two minds about whether to go for a D80, or D200, and made the cardinal sin in the end of handling a D200 – after that it was decision made. The handling of the D200/ D300 range is excellent, very solid and specific buttons on the camera body for just the right things.

That said, I think the D200 was the wrong purchase for me. The body was just heavy enough for my neck to feel strained after a days shooting, a problem I never had with the D50. Also, with the D200 you sacrifice battery life, and high iso performance over the D50.

Overall, I like the D200, but feel buying a D80 instead would have given me the things I liked in the D200 (bigger viewfinder, resolution) without the increase in camera weight. That said, with the D80 you make the same sacrifice of poorer battery battery life/ high iso performance as the D200.

Other mistake I made was selling the D50 shortly afterwards. The D200 just proved too heavy for me, for walkaround use, and in the end I bought another D50 for precisely this purpose.

For the record I am mainly a landscape, travel, lowlight and portrait photographer, so bear this bias in mind when you’re reading the above.

    Hope my experience is helpful,

    Damien
