Nikon D200 with 18-200mm lens. A good package?

A friend of mine has the D200 since June and I’ve seen it in action and seen the results. Its very good. Its a good machine not costing the earth. I’m told its simular in spec to the D2x with a less rugged casing…..?
KPMParticipantI have been using the D200 with a Tokina 28-70 2.8 ATX pro for some time.
Love the results, but still on a learning curve.
Just picked up the 18-200 lense today after ordering it in March through Halls cameras.
Got it for a good price – EU819 – hope to give it a run out this weekend, if not before. If you’re interested, I’ill drop you aline with what I think of performance / results etc.

BertieWoosterParticipantThanks everyone, for the continued discussion. I’m still hovering in the balance!!!

Probably as a non-Nikonian you’re not familiar with that 18-200mm lens, but in the Nikon world it has received tremendous reviews and it could well be the most-in-demand lens of all makes and brands at the moment. Supposedly the image quality, range and VR are unbelievably good – with build quality being the only negative comment I’ve read about it anywhere. So I reckoned it to be the ultimate walkabout.Kevin
I’d be very grateful to hear how you find the D200/18-200mm combination. Thanks in advance.weelesMemberI recently upgraded to the D200 and am well pleased with it. I have never been a fan of the new ‘Super-zooms’ so I opted instead for a 17-55 f2.8, (a lens that I have drooled over for some time). Unfortunatly I purchased mine about a month before the recent price drops so I do feel a little hard-done-by. The only consolation is, both camera and lens preform way beyond expectations.
As to some of the previous responses about buying from Digital Rev in Hong Kong, I have a friend who has bought from this company on several occasions. So far he has been lucky with the import duty and VAT, but the strange thing is, the goods have always arrived, not from Hong Kong, but from an UK address. Somewhere in Surry if my memory serves me right.

That’s why he’s been “lucky” with the duty and VAT as there isn’t any liability on good purchased within the EU, which is exactly how this would look coming in to Ireland from the UK. I think it gets to the UK under some form of duty and VAT prepaid arrangement – I’m not entirely familiar with how this works, although I’m led to believe it’s perfectly legal and above board.
