Nikon D3100 – Best place to buy?
-
GrimsdottirParticipant
Hello! (First post.)
I’m gonna get my first DSLR this week, and am planning on hopping aboard the Nikon train. I was wondering where you’d reccomend I’d buy? I know Gunns gets a good rep on this site so was thinking of trying there. Thing is, it looks much cheaper on Amazon but I’d prefer to buy local if the price difference wasn’t huge, so I said I’d pop on here and ask your thoughts.
Also regarding lenses – if you were to pick this camera up for the first time, what lens would you buy in addition to the kit lens? In terms of what I’m going to be using it for – a bit of everything, plan on taking a few classes but looking for as much versatility as I can get without breaking the bank. For example, Gunns add a 55-200 VR lens for E794. Good value, or am I better just buying the body and kit lens and seeing what lens I fancy online or something in a few weeks. (As for how much I can do/use it, I’ve been playing with a borrowed dSLR for 6 months now – understand most of the basics I suppose.)
Cheers!
damien.murphyParticipantNothing like a dslr and kit lens to get you started, and see what you like. As to where to buy, I also like to buy local, unless the price difference is too high, in which case I may look further afield. Gunnes, Berminghams and Conns, would be the three that jump to mind of where I’ve bought myself in Dublin, with Gunnes being top of my list, as like most I’ve fallen in love with the place over the years, and try to give them my custom whenever possible.
In any case, I’m sure others will chime in with recommendations, so you should get some balanced opinion and recommendations.
One thing I will add though, is I have no qualms myself in buying used cameras and lenses. Most people keep their kit in good order, and much used kit for sale is lightly used, and often great bargains can be had. Perhaps not the way to go, if you’re a first time buyer, but if you feel confident you know what to look for/ have a friend that could help, the used market can be a great way to go sometimes.
PaddyFParticipantI would go with the kit lens on its own for now, and then decide what kind of length you would need in the lense, I have a 55-250 and the length is great but at times its not short enough, I also have an 18-55 but I would like something longer than a 55 and shorter than 55 to bridge the gap for some photos. As for places to buy, local is always great but be sure its a large chain and not one that is in trouble and could close down, this could make things awkward if you have problems. Also take a look online at the likes of pixmania too
slang61Participanti would recommend an 18-200 lens if at all possible.
while not terribly fast usually f3.5-6.3
they are a great idea for an all rounder
you would have a lot of bases covered for a beginner with this type of lens.hope this helps
good luck with it and we hope to see lots of pictures up for c&c when you get going.STU

Good advice, but to be honest if you’re buying in Dublin where often the best deals are, the biggest camera shops are also non-chain stores, and the ones in which you will likely receive the best service. Conns and Berminghams are professional Nikon/ Canon dealers, and Gunnes I do not see going out of business in the morning. In any case, you can always deal with Nikon direct for any potential issues, but would be surprised if you had any issues with a new camera out of the box.
