Video in top of the range cameras is becoming a must-have feature, and I think it’s a trend that will continue. The Red Camera folks came up with the modular hybrid approach, and it’s going to be very expensive, but I think they got it right, and the other brands must believe video is a feature that’s going to be more relevant in the future. Higher demand for multimedia content online and possibly the implementation of paper-thin screens in magazines (with oled technology), or the increased usage of devices like iphone or kindle to read newspapers and magazines somehow justifies the video feature in high-end still cameras, though I think it will become way more relevant in the future.

I’d rather see Nikon coming up with something like a digital F3 or FM2, smaller, with less bells and whistles. They (Canon, Nikon, Sony) should give their customers different options, i.e. having cameras with and without video capability, and price them accordingly. That’s why I’d pick a D700 over a D3 anytime (and that too is slightly too big for my taste), and imho it has more features than 99% of the users would actually use in the field, but I guess that depends a lot on what kind of photography you’re interested in.
By the way, the D3s looks like a very small improvement over the D3, which is a fantastic camera, but I would’ve loved to see some good lenses announced yesterday (fast primes – 24mm, 28mm and 35mm, f/1.4 to f/2 – and a good 17-35mm re-design, or something like that).
g0riIIaParticipantJust to clarify for jb7: an online dictionary defines flagship as “the chief one of a related group” so for example, that would mean for Nikon the D3 series for Canon the 1d series, for BMW the M range, for Merceded Benz the AMG range, most manufactuer’s have a flagship models and these (in my humble opinion) would all be ‘flagship’ level. It was not necessarly a literal maritime reference. Just trying to prevent us going off on some seafaring tangent here. I’m in no way trying to instigate a Nikon/Canon comparison, just trying to see how many people would spend 5 grand on a stills camera and use it for video.
