“We’ll know anyone seen with a D3X around his neck is just a pencil-pushing desk-job amateur with too much cash to burn, since photographers are waiting this one out.” from Ken Rocwell!!!

    Ring ring, ring ring.
‘Hello, is that Bermingham Cameras? I was on to you a few minutes ago to order….. yeh! … yeh! … is it possible to cancel it?. And another thing…. don’t tell anyone it was me ordered it. I know, I know, …………….’

That was close, I wouldn’t want anyone to think I was a bit of a poser!

‘With DX format lenses—designed for cameras with smaller sensors—the D3x produces sizable 10-megapixel images.’ (marketing blurb)…..

Does this mean the D2x with DX lenses will be bigger ie 12-megapixel-ish images ?
Is it not true that to get the full advantage of ‘full frame’ sensors , compatible lenses are reqd & accompanying additional expense.

costly business these days when you consider a D2x body was costing about €3,000+ about 2 years ago & now resale about €800 !!

    Yes.

The D3 with a DX lens is only 6MP, so the D2X will have more resolution (with DX lenses). With the D3X that now goes to 10MP, still under the D2X in terms of resolution. But very few pro’s have DX lenses as the Nikon pro lens line-up were always full frame “film” lenses. But there is far more to a camera than simply resolution (noise, colour, sharpness etc etc etc etc).

Personally I was going to pick up a D3X. I realised I was losing frame rate and ISO performance over my D3, but considering I’m in the studio for most of my shooting, I was willing to trade these for the extra pixels. However, I’m not willing to pay the €8K+ price tag.
