good luckthephotoguyMemberHey a nikon D40 no kidding.
I have one too and its a great one for starting out and on a budget.Have you tried makeing light circles and shapes on manual mode in the dark ??
set to manual and set it to a real slow shutter speed like 15″ set the timer 10sec/ ISO to 200.and single shot
Have a torch ready hit the shutter button run in front of the camera and go crazy with the light..
oh oh and have a steady place for the camera maybe a tripod as the camera must not move from the first shutter click.Ok this might sound kinda stupid but it has many applications if you have a infared remote for the camera-ARGOS sells them i think 20euro.
Picture spooky areas and using this teqnique with different coloured lightsor getting the familys kids over and loads of lights and pictures for them…..Or partys.
Gotta go do this again….lol
TIP there is a option in the camera called MIRROR LOCKUP this stops the mirror from shutting hard and can b used also in this idea and in normal landscape photos for extra detail..
richiebMemberI have a Nikon D40 my self and am learning a lot with it.
The main trick I find helpful is to take loads of test shots while changing settings each time and seeing the results. You can see what i.e. chancing the aperture does to the photo or even the image optimised settings e.g. the vivid or less vivid options. I find that indoor shots seem to turn out great at iso400 for some reason. After that, iso noise starts to creep in.
After a few months now with it, I am starting to feel the limitations with it, in particular the low light handling. I haven’t got the cash to upgrade the body to a sexy D700 yet, so I bought a sb-600 flash instead. The advantage of this is that now I have a flash to learn all about flash photography ( off and on camera) and it also improves some indoor photos 1000% ( yes 1,000)
I also spent €60 on a good tripod, this has also opened me up to extra avenues of photography.
The end result being that when I am finished with the D40, the only thing that can make my photos better will indeed be the high end camera and lense…. if that makes sense :)
P.S. check out my flickr link in my sig for some examples of the D40 in action
richiebMemberWillemMemberHave you got an external flash for it? I found this made a massive impact when I was taking photos indoors. I never realised because I thought that’s what they had them built in for. You can get generic brands pretty cheaply, and they allow all sorts of cool things like directional lighting that you can play with. :?:
