Nikon D5000 compatibility with SB-700 flashgun

    Hi,
Another newbie question – I have Nikon D5000, looking to buy Speedlight SB-700 flashgun. The only thing SB-700 isn’t listed in ‘official’ compatibility list in D5000’s manual. Will it work with D5000? Any additional info that I may be missing here?
Both of them seems to have iTTL mode..
    Thanks for replies

The D5000 is older than SB-700. Look at the compatibility list on Nikon’s SB-700 page

    Thanks for reply Ted.
Nikon’s SB-700 pages says ‘Compatible cameras: All cameras compatible with Nikon Creative Lighting System (other cameras can be used but functionality is reduced)’
Same on Nikon’s page about D5000 – ‘Nikon D5000 Other Features:Support for the Nikon Creative Lighting System when using SB-900 or SB-800 Speedlights, or the SU-800 Wireless Speedlight Commander.’
Seems to be both have Creative Lighting System, but there’s nothing about straight forward compatibility as ‘SB700 fits to D5000’ )

Call Conn’s in Dublin. Tell them you are confused by all of this. Will they guarantee they work together. You could also call Nikon support

I use an SB-600 and it’s mostly the same as the SB-700. Nikon mostly does incremental changes so I’d be happy to buy a SB-700 for my old D300

Checked with Conn’s – basically they said newer flashes are compatible with older cameras.
Same from Nikon – ‘Dear Customer ,
Thank you for contacting Nikon technical support regarding your query.
The SB-700 is fully compatible with the D5000. ‘
Sounds like I’ll be ordering one of SB700 soon.

Enjoy the flash. One thing Nikon is good about is maintaining compatibility between their newer and older models, and in most cases the camera is the limiting factor with regard to what functionality you can access with the flash. I had an SB-600 once, but found it a bit complex, although one of these days I’ll pick up a nice little SB-400 for those times when a bit of fill or bounce flash wouldn’t go astray.

    Damien,

I went the other way. SB-400 came first and then the SB-700. Both very useful. The 400 is a jewel. It does all of the magic creative lighting stuff, which is all done by the camera anyway. If you purchase one, learn how to use flash comp.

Seems a smashing little flash alright. Think the SB-600 was too much for me, given the dyed-in-the-wool available light shooter that I am. A smashing flash though, and only regret the SB-400 wasn’t around back then when I was looking for a flash :)
