hi all since i got my new camera 3 weeks ago i am a little disappointed with the finished images which seem more than a little soft. Any quick tips on how to get sharper images ( i do realise its me and not the camera by the way). Cheers

Hey Aiscath…Just joined you today …got my hands on my brand new D80 and 18-135mm lens…and I am in Luuurvve!!! :D

I haven’t taken any shots worth talking about yet..only powered it up about 2 hours ago…but I love the DOF which is something I was never able to do easily on my Fuji….

I’ll be following this thread for future reference :D

One VERY HAPPY new Nikon owner :D

If you’re shooting in RAW then your image will always be soft, lacking contrast and under saturated. Some PP is required.

Great timing though … I just posted how I do my sharpening: http://aidanfinn.blogspot.com/2007/02/how-i-sharpen.html

BTW, the D80 has a great reputation and is either #1 or #2 in it’s level in the market depending on who you talk to.

Hi robbie, delighted you got your d80 will be interested to see how you get on with. There is so much to learn………LOL at your “just started mt DSLR fund” postings. As i am still in middle of film course its hard to get the time i would like with the digital.
Aidan i am shooting in the raw! What shold i be shooting in????

RAW is the way to go. You retain total control over the image. With 35mm (film SLR) shooting you had to master the darkroom. With Digital SLR, you have to master the digital dark room. Have a read of my post (above). I discuss the method I use for sharpening there.

Other things you need to master in PP are levels, curves, saturation, contrast, shadow/highlight. There’ll be plenty of material in the photoshop section. And there is loads to be found if you google for it. The magazines often do step-by-steps every month on the basics of mastering photoshop.

If you need to shoot in jpeg, go to the “Shooting” menu just underneath the “playback” menu
and select Optimize Image and find image sharpening as per below and set to medium high or high, or whichever suits your taste.

If you are still not happy post an image and let us know what shutter speeds etc.

    Hope this helps.
