As for Canon changing the lens mount – at the time I thought Canon were mad to do this but now I think it was a master-stroke and I for one am delighted that the Canon engineers had the foresight to do what they did when they did. It’s one of the reasons Canon can so easily do full-frame as the lens throat is significantly larger than Nikon’s. Granted, not everyone wants full frame, but at least with Canon you have the choice!
I don’t get this. If the Nikon lens throat is big enough on a film SLRs for 35mm film to get exposed, surely it is big enough for a 35mm full-frame sensor to get exposed??

Don’t forget that film and digital sensors behave differently when it comes to light capture. The lens throat is only one aspect affecting the ability to handle full-frame. Other important factors are the register size and the acceptance angle of the sensors pixels. Film emulsion doesn’t really care about acceptance angles, but it’s a critical factor for digital cameras. A larger lens mount allows for a larger acceptance angle (and also makes it easier to accomodate a full frame chip in a body with a shorter register).
MarkKeymasterThe lens throat only comes into play with the Nikon DX lens though. Rest are full frame lenses.

Super advice all round. Much appreciated. It’s great to see such help for a question from a first time poster. Will let you know what I buy and hope to contribute to the forum very soon.

JoeExpresbroParticipantDid you ever decide which way to go Joe? Gonna be in the same boat myself soon hopefully…

first up I’m a 30D owner and I love it, cracking camera … generally I don’t do and don’t have time to do a lot of post processing with Photoshop etc. … time and knowledge being the main factiors, as mentioned above 10Mp v 8Mp not much to talk about BUT there is one aspect of the 80D that very attractive: it’s internal “Image editing features” feature .. exclusive to the D80
got this from http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/9419/nikon_d80/
“D-Lighting automatically brings out detail to enhance results and add creative flair, all the while optimizing overall exposure balance. Red-eye correction automatically detects and compensates for the annoying red-eye effect sometimes caused by flash. Trim can be used to produce smaller files for easy sharing or greater efficiency. Image Overlay merges a pair of selected RAW (NEF) files taken with the Nikon D80 to create a new composite image. Other options include Monochrome settings (Black-and-white, Sepia, Cyanotype) and Filter Effects (Skylight, Warm filter, Color balance). Multiple Exposure is a new shooting option that creates a single image within the camera from up to 3 consecutive exposures, producing an effect automatically that resembles multiple exposure techniques used with film”If I were buying again, this would sway me :)
[/url]GrahamBParticipantCanon vs Nikon — this could get heated.
I use a Canon 350d which i personally think is great.
Like Thorsten people have asked me how i find the flash system with Canon and the best I can say it that if
you use the 430ex or up you will be fine. I have spoken to two people who say the 420ex is very underpowered
and really gives noticably bad result.I do think though that now is a good time to for the 30d, what with the rumours floating about the 40d the price is dropping.
I am very tempted to go for the 30d now but i think i’m gonna save up and wait for the 40d.Whichever you go for though you are going to get a great camera.
Good luck and happy addiction
