As an owner of a D70s I’m drooling already!

dpreview.com has a hands on preview, check it out here http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond80/

Interesting – I’ll have to look at this a little more in-depth later before deciding if this is Nikon’s very late answer to Canon’s 30D or if it’s a pre-emptive strike against something that Canon might release at Photokina. Traditionally, Nikon have always played catch-up to Canon. While this does mean that they “might” have more stable products, it seems Canon always have the edge on technology. It will be interesting to see if Nikon make a jump with the new D80.

Its probably in reaction to the Sony Alpha ?

Possibly. But I don’t think they could have reacted that quickly, unless they knew it was coming and had started the product development cycle long before the Alpha was announced. To be honest, I’d be surprised if the two big manufacturers consider Sony a serious threat despite Sony’s stated goal of being the number 2 player in this game by next year. I can’t see Nikon’s no. 2 spot being threatened by anyone although a takeover by Fuji sometime cannot be ruled out (think about it – Fuji make Nikon mount cameras!!!). Meanwhile Canon plan on strengthening their no. 1 position by cutting costs (and jobs!) worldwide.

In my courses I find that a lot of women (and some men) go for the Canon 350D because of it’s small size and lighter weight. I noted that the D80 is smaller and lighter than the D70(s) and when coupled with the new 18-135 DX lenns (27-202 in 135mm equiv terms when multiplied by 1.5 to take account of the sensor which is smaller than a 35mm film frame) is going to be an excellent package.

Tho I’m still contemplating a visit to the Bank Manager to talk about the possibility of adopting a D2Xs and an 18-200 VRII (we can dream!).

I think here are three threads on this in different parts of the forum .. So random pick ;)

The DPReview preview is interesting, all pretty positive and standard so far – but I suppose more will surface as people get their mits on them for a try out !

The D200 used an older version of the sensor in the Sony Alpha so I’d bet it’s a similar sensor in the D80.
