Does anybody know if there is a way in the flash menu or D90 menu’s that stops the flash from giving 3 short flashes before the main flash? its very annoying and i can no longer get instant shots because the slight delay, i have never seen it happen with professional photgraphers when at weddings etc . cheers

Sounds like you have Red Eye Reduction on. Very easy to do on the Nikons without realising it. Press in the Flash Button on the left of the camera and move either the front or rear dials (I can’t remember which one right now). The LCD screen at the top should clear except for the flash settings. If you see the flash symbol and the eye symbol in the square then move the dial until you just see the flash symbol only. This should solve your problem,

OMG your a life saver! so simple to turn it off, im sorted now thanks! so the 3 pre flashes are there to stop red eye reduction which i thought was only a problem when you use compact flash cameras built into the body where people would be looking directly into the flash. must have been on by default! Thanks! :D
