Nikon Used or Refurbished

I’m an avid Canon user, I’ve never touched a Nikon in my life.
I’m currently selling my EOS 300D on eBay. My 1st was a 20D, then a 30D, then no camera (for about a year), until about 2 months ago I bought a used EOS 300D. Nice little camera, but I feel now that I’ve sold of allot of unused equipment, like my 70-200 lens, flashguns etc… I want to give Nikon a go.
I had ALLOT of Canon equipment, I want to get back into photography, and before I start buying lenses, flashguns etc… again, I want to see what Nikon’s like.
I guess my question would be, is the Nikon D60 a good enough Nikon to give me an idea of what I’ll be working with. The idea is to buy (bidding on a refurbished D60 at the moment) a used or refurbished Nikon, use it for about 4 – 6 months, then either keep the Nikon (or rather then sell and by the D300 or D700), and sell of the rest of my Canon gear (still have the 100 – 400 lens, 2 x 580 flashguns, 100mm macro lens, macro flashgun etc…), or maybe just keep all the Canon gear as well. Nothing wrong with 2 systems is there…
Same as when I swopped from Windows to Mac, took a chance and has never looked back.Anyways, would like to know what everyone thinks about the Nikon D60, good camera to get into Nikon or not?
Thanx Everyone
shutterbugParticipantI know nothing about Canon or Nikon so this is going to be no help to you
at all! I am just interested in your reasons for changing? If you have a lot
of Canon gear why not stick with it, are you unhappy with the results that
Canon give? From reading reviews of cameras and lenses from both they seem to be very
closely matched ok one might have something the other doesnt and vice versa
but on the whole it is largely down to what you can do with them .I always feel you lose out big time trading in gear :( Anyway I am just being
nosey really :)Shutter BugMemberLike you say: ‘I’m just being nosy’
Same here, never used Nikon in my life, have heard allot about Nikon’s Image Quality especially sharpness. Money’s not the issue here. I’ve bought all my Canon gear at very low prices in the past, the small bit that I’ll loose is nothing to what I’ll gain with my new system. I have two friends anyways, that’ll buy most of my gear the moment I tell them I’m selling (actually, they’ve been saying to use Nikon, so they can buy my gear…lol)
I am very happy with Canon, always have been, but my gear is at an all time low, so I might as well experiment now… why not. Maybe I’ll use both systems. i’ve always heard Nikon’s Macro lenses are fantastic, maybe that’s what I’ll use it for.
Just want to experiment. I am however not interested at all in Sony or Samsung or any other DSLR for that matter.
shutterbugParticipantFintanParticipantWhy dont you rent a Nikon for a week or a weekend? You wont need months to evaluate.

In a word “No”. The D60 has no Adobe RGB option, no Auto Exposure Bracketing, only 3 focus points, no motor in the body (so choice of auto focus lenses is restricted) and the Raw & Jpeg option only gives a Basic Jpeg (which means it has the guts squeezed out of it).
If you’re thinking Nikon you should at least think of the D90, though the D300 is really where’s it’s at,
Dave
Shutter BugMemberHi Dave, I read your reply only after I won it last night. I hear what you’re saying. Was looking at the D200, D300 and D700 (bit much for experimenting)
I don’t get much time for photography, but at least I’ll have the camera now and’ll be able to use it whenever I get time.
It’s body only, so I want to buy a Nikon lens (good all rounder), but the 18-200 Vr is around €500, but I don’t know if I should just get the Sigma 18-200 OS instead. But I really want to use all Nikon.
Shutter BugMemberWhat I’m wondering now as well.
Dave, you said to get the best from Nikon you need the D300 or upwards. Is Nikon’s lower end models not good?
When you buy Canon, even the 1000D gives great quality.
Just a worrying thought really. Do I need to buy top of the range Nikon to get Nikon quality?

I never mentioned anything about quality, just camera settings. The image quality from the D40 onwards is great, you’re just restricted in certain ways until you get up to the D200/D300,
Dave
DeeboParticipantI have a D40x and its a great camera. Actually selling this now as I bought a D80 and this is a superb camera.
The picture quality on the d40x is really good and its a great learner camera. I had a bridge before that and now moved to the D80. I say you should buy to your top end of the budget. For, as soon as you get your camera you will want a new one in the next 1 year or so. I plan to try and upgrade every 2 years.Shutter BugMemberMy apologies Dave, I misunderstood you.
I was looking at a few videos on Youtube on the D60, so far I’m well impressed. Watched a few on the D300 as well. Told the wife today I think I might be selling my Canon gear, start buying Nikon, just a feeling I have, but only time will tell.
Do you have recommendation on a (preferably) Nikon all rounder lens under €300 (even 2nd hand will do)?

Bearing in mind that all zoom lenses are compromises, and big zooms suffer a little more sometimes, the lens I’d strongly recommend as a great all rounder is the 18-200 VR. Outside your price band I’m afraid, even second hand,
Dave
Shutter BugMemberHi Dave, yeah this is the 1st lens I’ll buy if I swop over to Nikon, along with the 80 – 400 (to replace my Canon 100 – 400), but for my ‘experiment’ it’s a bit much, I might look at the Nikon 18 – 105 VR I think…
