Did a shoot for a freind of mine who’s trying to break into the music biz. She needed some promo shots for the website and for sending with Demo’s. This is a selection of shots from the shoot.
Thanks for looking
Robbie

plainoldmeMemberWow Robbie these are just fantastic!
I’m not a fan of the first one, I don’t personally like how dark it is. The rest of the shots are just….wow.
I really like the second image, and the last one. They really stand out for me. But I think number 3 is the kinda thing you’d definitely see on an album cover!!
Well done, great set! :)

PeteWMemberI second what POM says above, appreciate that the first one could be darker than you would expect as a look, rather than conventional portraiture, but I think it just goes too far.
#3 definitely album cover potential, even with space for typeset !
ExpresbroParticipantThanks guys..appreciated.
I’m a little perturbed by the darkness of No.1 though. when I look at this on my monitor at home it looks a lot brighter. I didn’t intend for it to be this dark at all.
Thing is, on my work monitor here it looks dark too. But on this monitor I can’t see all those little shades on the bottom of the page that Mark added, and on my monitor at home I can see them all perfectly. So I’d assume that was the more accurate. I think it’s a contrast thing rather than a brightness issue to be honest. I have gone for a high contrast look on most of the shots.
Maybe if someone with a calibrated monitor could have a look and tell me whether or not it is indeed overly dark.
Anyway, thanks for the comments Meghan and Pete..really helpful :-)
osheadParticipantI like them Robbie. Seems the girl is more comfortable than the bloke in front of the camera. In all of the images, there is no interaction between the couple. It would be nice to see some where they are less serious and not directly engaged with the camera. The girls skin in the fourth one is over exposed and almost bleads into the background.

jb7ParticipantShooting two people is always more difficult than one-
about four times as difficult, I think…Sometimes it can be good if they know what they want, so that the idea can be developed,
these look a little like trying things out as you went along…The most successful one for me is the second,
I wonder if that idea could be developed a bit further?Following on from Sinead’s thread about blur, or focus in pictures,
I wonder how it would look if both of them were out of focus-
Knowing you Robbie, I know you would have tried the same setup with the man out of focus,
so you could maybe just join up the best from both…I wouldn’t usually suggest such a thing, but they’re musos,
and they need to stand out, and perhaps it might be as good a graphic treatment as anything…Just an idea…
beefParticipantDefinitely the 2nd shot for me. It certainly seems to be the one most suitable for an album cover or promo poster if that makes any sense…
ExpresbroParticipantThanks again guys. Just the kind of stuff I’m looking for.
Joseph..you’;d be right about the trying as we went along thing. That’s exactly what it was. The space we were working in was very tight, so there wasn’t a lot of room for experimenting. But it was fun trying to come up with something different.
I hadn’t considered doing both of them out of focus…can look at that. I did indeed shoot a similar pic to the half face shot with the guy out of focus, but I wasn’t particularly happy with how the girl looked in it, it just didn’t seem to suit.
I was fairly conservative in my processing compared to what I could do I guess…although for me this is more than I’d usually do. So that leaves me a lot of leeway to do some funkier stuff. There’s a lot of detail in most of the shots and they are relatively well lit, so I can give those suggestions a try.
It was my first time to do something like this really, and I’ve enjoyed it. Hopefully I’ll be able to do more.
CooksterParticipantI like the first and fourth shots. there is real character in the faces, not just bored musicians posing and wondering if you’ll be the reason they get signed over their music. If anything 2 thru 5 are all overexposed on the foreground faces and could do with a bit more colour, unless they are goth and could do with darker backgrounds.
This is an area that is very hard to be original. I agree with the sentiment that there needs to be an understanding of the relationship between the 2. I’m guessing that its a duet, kinda Enya meets Aslan??
If I was in a band I’d be very happy to have shots of this quality in my presspack
Good stuff
