My guess is the status of your ranking comes from being the closest in a straight line to the finish point.
Even if that means you’re way off the general path, as long as you’re closer you get a better ranking.
With 65,000 or so boats it’s a bit like the start of a marathon, almost everyone’s first, or jostling for second, until they spread out a bit and things settle down.
Probably in a few days when we’ll see who has a better line.

Can anyone explain to me why, despite being in winds 5 knots faster than those Mark T is in, I cannot match his speed with any sail configuration. at any angle to the wind!!?

I think it updates bit by bit. I get the impression that your own data
are almost up-to-date, but other people’s data are a bit delayed.

I noticed a good number of PI boats heading south leaving cape town, and now I see the benefits – almost gale force wind in that area at the moment, my boat just did her personal best ever – 47.5 kmph!

    Still losing places though…!

Who else signed up to this ? I foolishly did to a few days back but feel like it’s a real solo effort around the world with no friends…..

My boat is – PeteW and I’m floundering somewhere down in 55000 position roughly, heading south past the western tip of Africa…approaching Cape Verdean

Well, after getting into a half decent position, my boat is going to be set adrift this weekend while I am away.

Anyone got any tips on how to minimise the damage?. I’ll probably just set a direct course and hope for the best with the Spinnaker. I’m not going to waste my money on autosails in this pointless, yet strangely addictive, trash.

All I want to do is set my boat away in the opposite direction.

But just another few hours…maybe the wind will pick up…jeez, I made up 43 places…where is everyone…damn 11am wind direction change…lost 2000 places in 10 minutes…How did Alimony get there…ha, look at The McInroy…nah, feck this for a lark…I’m out…maybe just another few hours…

    Any psychiatrists able to analyse???

I’ve just gained 25000 places in 15 minutes. I reckon the rankings
are worked out by taking a perpendicular from your boat to the yellow
dotty line. I turned a few points to port and left a fortieth-million boats
    trailing in my spray.

Cheers Pete, I’ve just sent you an email.

Now, this is a test of trust. If I find my boat on its way back to Cape Town on Sunday evening then someone is going to be walking the plank.

    Much obliged Pete.

This is strange. In leg one, the Code Zero sail was most effective when angled at 90 degrees to the wind.

Now it seems to be acting more like a spinnaker and working at 120 degrees.

Perhaps somebody who has actually been in a sailing boat could enlighten me?

It actually changes hour by hour – maybe it’s the strength of the wind.
They did publish Polars – you’ll work it out…..

There doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to places lost or gained, I was third (in our group) and followed the leaders
religously…is that how you spell it?….and lost thousands of places even though my speed was faster than the wind literally!

But it is very addictive
