Off Camera Flash (430EX)
-
MDCPhotographyParticipant
I am doing an outdoor shoot this weekend and I was hoping to try a bit of off camera flash with the 430EX, can anyone tellme what adapters, etc I will need to do this.
Thanks
mervifwdcParticipantAs it’s this weekend, you’ll be pushed to do this cheaply/properly.
ideally, you want a radio controller for it, and you’ve a few choices on that front. The cheaper being the ebay cactus triggers, withc mixed success stories, right up to fancy PW or radio poppers which support ETTL. The high end will probably set you back 400 euro plus, but I’ve not checked in quite a while.
the cheapest option is also probably the quickest, go for a cable. I’m guessing sheldon or some of the other site sponsors could supply a cable to do this for between 10 and 30 euros (wild guess on my part!) AND you’ll have it for the weekend. It will mean using manual controls on your flash, practice with that before your shoot.
I’m not sure id the 430ex has a “pc” port for a cable, if not, then you want a cable with a hotshoe on one end to put the flash into, and a pc connector to connect to the side of your camera. but check with the suppliers as I’m not 100% sure.

climberhuntParticipantAll good info from Merv there.
There’s also another option, which is an optical trigger that you stick on the bottom of your 430ex:
http://cgi.ebay.ie/SKY4-Optical-Slave-Trigger-for-Hot-Shoe-Flash-PC-Sync-l_W0QQitemZ400071711811QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_CameraAccessories_CameraFlashUnits_JN?hash=item5d2621dc43&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14If your camera then has a built-in flash, you can trigger it from that. Bear in mind that the on camera flash then affects the scene, and the optical method of triggering is probably the most unreliable of all (of optical, cable and radio). It more-than-likely won’t work during daylight, as the trigger wont see the flash because of all the ambient light.
I don’t know why I’m even suggesting it, it’s so unreliable. ;)
Rgds,
Dave.
