New York, Christmas. I was waiting for my turn to look through the fencing around Ground Zero and suddenly realised that these people, taking photos, saying a prayer, just looking, spoke volumes. I love the seagull on the parking meter under Brooklyn Bridge and I thought that the view of Liberty through the trees in Battery Park, with the cranes on the New Jersey shoreline imitating her raised hand, wasbetter than the ones that I took of her straight on. So, I’m here to learn and I’ve got my mental armour on – give it to me. Took these with a compact. Now have a D40X. What settings on the new camera would have made these a better shot? (I’m trying this approach with some photos from home in the Beginner’s section as well, if anyone would care to look. Again, apologies for the way I upload – it’s the only way I know how)

I like the 3rd on alot esmie. It’s a unusual take on an overphotographed monument and I like the verticals leading through to the statue which gives it the sense of place. Not sure if the cranes are a little small to get what you were trying to emphasise but I can see where you coming from and it would be interesting to see a shot of these zoomed in with the statue on the far right of the frame.
