Old streets of Dublin

I took these shots with the old Zeiss Ikon – a portrait of which I have I have posted under cameras. I don’t know how the quality compares to the Holga but I am happy that it still works. They were taken in the Dublin 7 area. Numbers 1 and 2 are full frame and 3 is cropped.
absolonParticipantNice ones. I would have cropped the 2nd one a bit tighter. I guess you rotated the 3rd one… There is a white stripe left on the left edge of it.
FlipflipParticipantI like the second one.
The first is too burnt out and distracting.
And the third for me is just a bit boring.
earthairfireParticipantThe 2nd one is the shot for me. Love the human aspect. On a technical level, I’d be tempted to crop it a little to remove the burnt out sky.

shutterbugParticipantEddieParticipantIt looks as if it has fine sharp lens and you have made good use of it. Especially like the portrait and got a laugh out of the tree and seat shot.
RodcunhaParticipantGreat shots Joolsveer, I really like the second shot it has such a feeling to it…
The first one is also a brilliant capture… would love to know where to find that tree :D

Isn’t it funny that these pics were here for 50 days before they got a comment, and now everyone’s pitching in?
No.1 is an interesting subject, but no.2 is the best photo for me. A real 1950s look about it. The first house I bought in Pontypridd was very like these.
Where’s the window gone from the right hand house?

Pete, It’s a big surprise to me too. Maybe it is because I mentioned the Holga!
I can see where the window sill begins on the right.

Not really. Sometimes when people look at shots and have nothing to say (constructive or otherwise) they just move on. But then, when someone chips in with a comment, that comment can be a seed that sparks critique. I’ll be honest I saw these shots and just “humphed”. They’re average, the content doesn’t appeal to me and all in all I found them boring – they just didn’t grab my interest. BUT your comment and then Dave’s comment about saying “perhaps it’s the Holga” made me want to comment.
Dave, technically I think all the shots are well delivered, regardless of what camera you used. Ok, perhaps there are some areas over exposed, but all in all I find them technically OK. But there’s nothing in any of the shots that make me look twice, the content just doesn’t appeal.
MarkKeymasterDon’t think that its at all unusual Pete. Sometimes I and I know other members just select
the ‘View unanswered posts’ link and see those which were unanswered and review.Lots of times new members join and browse through old posts and make a comment
which bumps up a post for other people who never saw the post first time out to post
a reply to :)Mark
RobertoMemberI think that the first photo has a good potential.
I would crop the left side to keep only the tree there. Make darker the background of the right. I would add some tones to it.
But the best will be go back and take the shot again.
I will send you my version.joolsveerParticipantciaran wrote:

Thanks Ciaran for your input. I have to disagree with you on the appeal, however, the content may not appeal to you but it does to me. I would not bother to take the shots and to post them here if I did not like them. I am sure that the snaps can be improved and as always I am happy to consider constructive criticism where it is offered.

I dont think its the Holga. The happy snappers are or were on holiday and had a bit more time to comment i guess. I seen them when first posted and enjoyed them without commenting. Very fond of the guy with the hose but on this viewing feel the image would benifit with a slightly warmer tone. Could be done digitally, or traditionally by using a warmtone paper and developer or maybe just toning the finished print. What kind of negative does the camera produce 35mm or 120.
joolsveerParticipantIt uses 120 film and gives 12 exposures to a roll so I suppose the negatives are 6X6. I must fish the negatives for these shots out and try to scan them again. I always have issues with dust though and my scanner software does not do a good job of removing dust and scratches.
