On-Line Printers
-
KPMParticipant
I have an order for approx. 50 7*5 inch and 20 10*8 inch prints. Usually I print at home as I have full control over he final image, but in this case its just not cost effective.
Has anyone used on-line printing services (photobox etc..) and if so, what was the final quality like ?
I have used printers in the Uk before (peak-imaging, Dlab7), but I really only have about a week or so before I have to hand over the finished product so time, as well as quality is important.Any tips, recommendations etc. gratefully received.
Thanks & regards
Kevin

KevinI used photobox.ie to print a few (wiro bound) calendars for xmas pressies for family and I have to say IMHO the quality was top notch.
btw, the calendars were printed in the UK so lead time might be a problem for you there.
Carl.
StevenHannaMemberI nearly always use PhotoBox. Right from 6×4″ up to 30″x20″, I have found the quality to be fantastic.
Excellent service and fast turn-around time. Couldn’t fault them.Steven
MarkKeymasterB+W or colour ? I find that photobox.ie are not good for b+w images.

They’ve always come back with a colour cast.Interesting point Mark, I never knew this as all my prints have been colour.

KPMParticipantThanks for all the feedback. I think I’m gonna give photobox a try. All the shots are colour.
Best regards

DerekLavertyParticipantNot sure what the images are off KPM, but for all my wedding images I use a lab in Scotland called Loxley. http://www.loxleycolour.com I find the quality top notch, 3 days from upload to doorstep and they will do skin tone colour correstion free of charge if you need it done, I cant fault them at all. You have to download a program called Loxley ROES, but it’s well worth it.
RobertoMemberI use photobox for my posters and very happy with them.
I had only one complaint about photo quality but had new one in two days time in perfect quality.AllinthemindParticipantA word of warning…..
Most of these online printing companies use Fuji Frontier printers. One of the features of these printers is “Image Intelligence”. This “Intelligence” will try and “Improve” your pictures by doing things like shadow and highlight recovery and in 9 out of 10 “amateur” shots, will improve the picture. If you’ve spent time editing to get your shot exactly as you want it, you may find it comes back a little different! Sometimes there is a box that you can tick that says something like “Optimize image”, make sure that you don’t tick this box! The Fuji printers are capable of fantastic prints if setup properly with “Image Intelligence” off. Also, watch out for cropping, you need to make sure you tick the box that will prihnt your image inside the page, not zoom and crop. Most compact cameras are 3:4 ratio and the deafult crop from the printer is to cut the edges off to fit an edge to edge print. Usually best to prepare the file to print to the size of the paper. Mono printers. There is another function of the Fuji printers that allows perfect mono prints, you just have to tell the printer to do it, if a mono print runs through under the colour workflow, they come out with a tint normally.
All best

I usually use Foto.com, and when I asked them if they made automatic adjustments, they said they didn’t. I’m pretty happy with the results, they usually come back pretty much spot on. That said, I’ve read of other people not being happy with them. I tried Photobox before Christmas as I was in a hurry to get a poster printed, and was not at all happy. The print came back probably about a stop underexposed, and with a yellow cast. I’m holding off judgement however until I get around to getting a proper hardware calibrator, and then will try test prints from each.
The main drawback to Foto is they can have lengthy delivery times, though the blame for this quite likely lies mostly with An Posts The last batch I sent was posted on Tuesday week, so I’m eagerly waiting on them as Foto have posted an ICC profile to use before sublmssion
