Yes, a nice idea – good simplicity and balance. My only thought is that there is too much dead space in the middle. A step to the left may have closed this up. A bit of fill in flash may also have helped lift the colours of the ring too.
Great advice, i agree completely about stepping to the left and using the flash would never have even crossed my mind!
