I will be doing a few small weddings for friends in the coming months, and I was thinking about the best way to display and sell prints to friends and family without too much hassle. I thought about just adding PayPal buttons to my website, but I recon it would take me forever, and I would actually have to go and get prints done & posted off myself.

I was looking at something like the Shutterfly Pro Gallery, but I really dont want to be paying $99 a year subscription fee as it’s not something I plan on doing very often!

What do the rest of you use, if anything?

    Would appreciate your feedback.

You could try the Photobox pro galleries?

photobox.co.uk (the .ie site doesn’t do pro galleries)

Seems they will only pay you any money you have made into a UK bank account so no luck there…

Try this crowd. They offer printing and posting of your images for prices that you dictate and you can present your images, with watermark, in a 600px wide image. If someone wants to buy anything only then will you have to upload a hi-res image. I find then quite useful.

Hi Alan – just had a look at that site. Two questions which aren’t clear from the site :

    (1) Do they allow pricing in euro ?
    (2) They say they send a cheque (check) – do you not lose out on lodging this to your bank ?

    Thanks, Frank

    Hi Frank.

I’ve asked the question about the dollars – it’s all they facilitate which is a huge downside. On the second comment, yes probably you would loose out by making a lodgement.

Was also just looking at PhotoReflect. Any comments on them? Seems to be free with pricing available in Euros as well.

I had a look at PhotoReflect – that looks good and with a UK Lab to link to this may be a good option. I’ll have another look later at the facilities – it might be worth my while jumping in there for my own needs.

Yep – just had a look at them.

Didn’t recognise the names of any of the labs (mainly US, with 1 UK one). I also couldn’t find a link to any sample sites, only some screenshots.
Last but not least, although they are ‘free’, they charge 18% (commission + charges) on sales.

Still, may be worth a try.

    Frank

PS If Smugmug or Zenfolio allowed self-fulfillment with euro pricing, or linked to a European lab, I would then think they should be at the top of the list.

This is another I initially loked into. It didn’t suit my needs initially but it might suit yours.

I only really want it for 2 weddings so I can make a few euro to cover my costs as I am not charging for doing them.. So I dont really want to go subscribing to anything at the moment.

If PhotoReflect turns out to be any good, I dont mind paying them a higher commission to escape any subscription fees – as I said I am not really hoping to make a fortune – just a few extra euro really.

I did read that the quality of the photos they put up on the gallery isnt great – and (I think it was this site), you have to send them full size files if someone places an order – before that they only upload small files.

I am not sure its worth the hassle of setting it all up for just 2 weddings!!!!

Another idea I had was to design a book on blurb.com and mark it up a bit and cover my costs that way. Anyone tried their books?

    Hi Nicola,

I have used Blurb once to make a book only a few months ago as a wedding moring present to my new wife.

The book came out excellent, but one thing is though just watch out for the full bleed on the edges. Don’t have anything too important their as it may get cut off. Also and I don’t htink this will be a problem if you are using a dslr is to make sure you shoot at the highest quality, as with a point and shoot you won’t be able to cover a full page. Otherwise the book can out very good.

Only took 10 days for delivery from Holland and it cost €37-38 for a 100 page book. Note you maybe better to get charged in $ and get it charged to your credit card, but not a problem if you want them to pay for it through site.

One other thing is though, if you want to make different size books in it you have to start from scrath with the project file…

i am planning on setting up this kind of service for people.

and working out some simple pricing system that would allow people to make decent money from prints without having to do much work

I have a server in my office lined up to deal with it etc

there are some quite cool possibilities which coulod allow you to do it from your own site and just have my system process the work for you
