Online or In College Photography

I know theres a few topics here about courses and colleges but i’m hoping to combine them all into one here.
I’ve been looking around for a while now to get myself moving in the job market again as i’ve had extended time off work and with how things are at the moment and my disinterest in following my Computer Engineer qualifications any further i’ve been looking into photography. I’ve been doing this for 2 reasons.
    1) To get another qualification and/or degree under my belt to buff up my CV.
    2) To try and wait out this current down in the economy.

Ive been looking online at courses and i’ve seen alot that offer a Fetac or Hetac level qualification. These interested me but then i remembered, i found online courses boring, hard to concentrate on and wooden. As i did a FAS computer and server course (or something like that) and found it hard to keep my head in. But when i went to college i learned alot more about computers off other students and people you interact with while in the course, during breaks and in the pub afterwards.

So here are the options i’ve found :
Griffith College offer a 3 year, part time, 3 nights a week BA in Photographic Media (HETAC). Your talking around 3.4k a year, for 3 years. In this environment your working along side others who have close to, same or more experience with you and you can learn off them to.

Killroy College offer a 6-9 month Correspondence for 535euro. Once you have enrolled as a student with them, a personal tutor will be assigned to work with you throughout your studies and provide expert guidance and tuition. You will be in a ‘class of one’, with your tutor, an experienced and qualified specialist in Photography distance education. Upside to this is your not just working with a computerized system which you click boxes and answer questions (going on what the FAS course was like) so you have a human entity at the other end, constantly assessing you and from what i’ve seen you get some sort of FETAC qualification at the end.

The third and last course i’ve looked at is an evening class, once a week for about 150euro in a local Institute of Further Education, a basic beginners course that lasts about 10 weeks. Im not sure what, if any, qualification you get from this. It could just be for those trying to get into it, beginners interested in learning a little more.

Those are the 3 best options i’ve come across. I’ve seen numerous online courses, but by removing the human factor i think courses do loss something. Am sure theres some i’ve missed but my goal here was to sum up for anyone interested in the furthering their current knowledge or just beginning and needed something to focus them on what i’ve found is a great and fun passtime.

I’m hoping to do something with myself and photography, I’ve had a few ideas for a small business and i’ve had some help visualizing it but i’d like to have something to add to my CV. I’ve yet to decide what to do, whether it be that Killroy College course or the Griffith 3 year course. I’d also like to extend into journalism as im an avid writer (or used to be anyway)

What i’d like to know is what you guys would recommend, from your own experiences, I understand a course does not a photographer make, but if someone were interested in doing a course, whether it be to kill time, buff up their CV or just get a greater understanding of a fun and exciting pass time, what would be the best direction to take.

PS I’d like to avoid confrontation here, since it’s a Beginners thread in the Beginners forum so any snide, snippy or ignorant replies, please keep them to yourself, my only hope here is to help those of us who want and/or need further education to come and get the answers best suited to them.

    Kind Regards
    Dave

also thanks to bigalguitarpicker who messaged me today i’ve also found out about this course:

Southern Regional College in Lurgan does HND Photography, both full time over two years, and part time over three years one day a week. Too late for this year, but there’s always next year. Fees are around £250 a year for the part time course.

BTEC HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN PHOTOGRAPHY (PATHWAY FOR PROGRESSION TO BA (HONS) IN CREATIVE IMAGING)

thats another good course and very helpful even though its a little further away then Dublin.
