To be fair, andybenitez did ask about online stores, so my “observation” was a bit misplaced.

    Tend to agree with that.

I really don’t see the point in paying extra. I work bloody hard for my wages each month, I’ve a young family, bills, cars to run, and a home to run… blah blah blah, we all have bills I know, but I really can’t get my head around paying a little more so you get a smile and a thank you. I’ve bought lots of stuff on-line, not just photography stuff, and any time I’ve had a problem, a phone call gets things sorted. OK you have to pay your postage back to them but that’s a little risk you take.
If the high street price is compeitive with an on-line price I’ll go for that.

Its a little more than a “smile and thank you”. I suppose I was thinking about advice (sometimes rare given that I sometimes know more through on-line research) and after-sales support (admitedly, something we sometimes have to fight too hard for).

Be very careful buying online. Some of the well known Scammers are reappearing with new names/websites/store fronts. Always google the store name/website/etc. and look for comments. If prices look especially low – this is a clue, so check very carefully.

The big UK Stores are mostly good. I have bought from Mifsuds, AJPurdy, LCE (Icegroup.co.uk), Digital Wonder World (Germany), 7Dayshop (Jersey). Advise, knowledge, and aftersales was fine. I look to Mifsuds first but the others are fine too. For used items LCE (Icegroup.co.uk), MPBPhotographic, Ffords, MXV, Jonathan Harris, and FixationUK, are all good to deal with.

Browsing around due to the current stg rate….. saw this on the AJPurdy site:

“Please note that unfortunately A J Purdy & Co Ltd are now in Voluntary liquidation and all enquiries should be directed to the following:

    M. H. Linton FCA FABRP and Paul Weber BSc FCCA, Leigh Adams LLP, Brentmead House, Britannia Road, London N12 9RU.

We would like to thank all our customers and suppliers over the past 77 years of trading. “

Not sure how recent this is, but just for info…..

Yes, it looks like. Choose from one of the above mentioned online shops and forget about shops where eveything is on sale. Check warehouseexpress.co.uk for prices and if you see the same item for 50% less (even 10% off their price is a lot) somewhere, then it’s likely a scam.

I have never heard of them. They are a registered company in the UK. They appear to be very new, only registered at Company House in August 2008.

They ship from Asia; so you might have issues with VAT and Duty when gear arrives in Ireland. I would give them a miss. Pay a little more with someone like Calumet and know that all will be well.

    Cheers.

The prices in Calumet are a lit bit to high. In Bite Size Deals the prices are lower.

Still, if you buy from Calumet, you end up with a camera and not an empty box posted from China.

In terms of the value of on-line versus shop presence, I think that Calumet have the “clicks and mortar” side of things cracked. They compete very effectively with Warehouse Express and you can order from the store at on-line prices.

I have seen them match teh price of the 5D makr II as well as L lenses.

For major purchases, I am prepared to pay for teh peace of mind of having teh retailer local to me and not half way round the world. For me, there is a vlaue in that.

    Anywhere you see this line,

“Wire transfer is the preferred payment method for international orders. It is the quickest and least expensive way to send payment”,

One more question: what do you think about that online shop: http://www.bitesizedeals.co.uk/About-Us-doc_1.html. I’m interested to buy a Nikon D90 with 18-105 VR, so I’m still looking for the best offer. Or should I wait couple o weeks when the pound will be go down???
    Regards
