Orange Tip Butterfly – (Anthocharis cardamines) – taken in Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow on 5 May 2011.

I think this is the first species to appear during the late spring/early summer. They are only about 2-3cm long

My observations for photographing are –
They do not fly when it’s overcast – or the sun is blocked by a cloud.
The rest up – then as the sun shines – they ‘warm’ up – then the wings open slowly – taking 4-5 seconds – then poof – gone.
It’s this moment when the wings are opening is the best time for capturing any butterfly/moth – so your framing and focusing must be done first.
