Out and About, Part 2 (10 Pics)

The last couple of months I’ve been out taking mostly street (ish) shots.
My idea is to try to capture the city large scale in MF and people scale in 135 format.
I’m still at the experimental stage with the street stuff to see what might work. For one thing I’m trying to get closer.
I’ve been using a few different films. Mostly, but not strictly, colour at night and b&w during the day.
I’m not looking for pairs, just thought it might be interesting to present some this way.Martin

but I’d be hesitant to recommend Tokyo as a first stop for Asian street shooting. Hong Kong or China or Bangkok, or the like, would be a lot, lot cheaper and more fertile shooting ground I would say.
Hong Kong has a much higher density of people, and a lot more of the sights, sounds and smells. Tokyo can be a bit clean and sterile, although if you live here you can find out the right places. In Hong Kong it is right in your face everywhere.If you do come, I’ll show you around :-)
1 and 5 stand out-
again, maybe too many…Both could do with a crop, I think, there are shapes to the sides of the pictures that take you outside the frame too easily…
I don’t know if you’re averse to cropping, if you are, you have to be fast on your feet-
and you have to be using a slr…If you’re not, I think they could be improved by a little off the sides-
Looks like you’re getting a good success rate, with these, and the other set-

not adverse to cropping, a couple have been cropped a bit already when I get around to printing I’ll probably be a bit heavier on cropping.
Leaving them generally uncropped is part of my training, forcing me to get in closer.
All were shot with a 35mm lens.The first I like a lot too, thought it’s not a street shot…
Cheers for the comments, I’ll post less and bigger next time, just getting a bunch out there to see what people generally think.

Hard to fault any of these, love the first, lost count after that, the best I think are b&w.

you are too kind, there is a lot to be improved on.
Interesting that you like the b&w best. I’m struggling to give up colour as it is often something that catches my eye, and there is plenty of it.
But it is true that when b&w works well it works much better than colour (different subjects of course).Here is the first with a bit of a crop, not sure if this is how I’d crop it. My shot angle was constrained, as it was a private area.
And once again, sorry its not street, but it was taken quite near to a street :) . Ilford FP4 +.
Lovely set of images Martin. I particularly like the ones of the shoes…! 35mm is what I am trying to shoot street with too. Its a good angle for this stuff. I’ll post a few when I’m confident enough…!

35mm came to me naturally, I have a 50m and 21mm, but 35mm is about my field of vision.
50mm would be easier on less crowded streets.
I got a camera with a silent shutter and built up my confidence with it, once I got practise I found I could use my clacky rangefinder, close in, in many situations too.Martin

Again this is a most interesting collection.
I think both colour and mono have their attractions.
I think the colour is especially valuable when the scene has
signs and reflections which might be lost in mono such as in #5.I think the colour works well in #6 as well where the lady in the red coat
stands out whereas in mono she would blend with the other pedestrians who
are similarly attired colourwise.I think mono works well when we want to concentrate the viewers attention on
the action or expressions such as in #8 where colour might have drawn our attention
to the signs or items in the distance and away from the lady on the phone and the
man in the foreground.Sorry for rambling on but your pictures got me thinking.
