Out and about with the Holga

Dug out the Holga, It has not had an outing in some time and went on walkabout around the Coombe and later that evening in the Pheonix Park. I had not noticed the sunny / shade switch had moved, I know they dont work but if its not left or right fully you get a very dark corner in your images. I had it jammed in position but it moved acidently. For this reason I had to crop the park image slightly but i think it worked out ok.

That’s a lovely set Eddie. There seems to be an awful lot more
quality to these than we usually expect to see from a Holga, but that’s
probably down to the user. Lovely framing in each and every one.
If I had to pick a favourite, I’d be torn between two and four.
    Really lovely tones…

They’re lovely Eddie. I like two.

What film did you use? I;m using acros 100 at the moment and I think they’re not going to come out because it’s so dull. Do they need a lot of light?
    Hope they do come out.

    Nice set Eddie-
    2 & 4 for me too-

Is this a glass lens Holga?
Don’t look very lo-fi to me, to be honest-
    look great-

    Thanks all

Rob, I think its the subject matter, I don’t do too much of the creative stuff that is normally associated with the Holga.

Aimee I always use 400asa and like to shoot in really bright sunny weather with the Holga, really the kind of light you avoid with most other cameras, the film was Kodak 400 t-max but I generally use Fuji 400 Neopan as the numbers on the back are easier to see when moving the film on. I would only use Acros 100 with a tripod and slow shutter speeds in poor light generally. If you have a sturdy tripod you can do time exposures without a cable release. The image below was between 30 seconds and one minute on “B” just holding down the shutter release button. I just count elephants for the exosure. A ND filter was attached with blue-tac.

JB The Holga is only a few years old so I guess its glass, I do try to be accurate with focusing distance , I have measurements on the lens, which makes it easy with subjects like these, as I said to Rob I try to choose subjects and lighting that suit the camera.

Eddie, you’re a legend. I knew i had been doing something wrong – not so many things the back fell off yesterday ruining my already crap roll of film!
Where did you get the measurements?
    Thanks again for the advice!

    The settings I use 1 person = 3ft 3 persons = 6ft 7 persons = 20ft infinitry = 30ft+ I just put stickers with measurements beside the people marks.

As regards the back falling off whats needed is a velcro coat. You get it in Hickey’s or similar, its velcro that has a sticky back and the overlapping piece that comes with it. The sticky bit you attach to the back of the Holga , cut through the red window or go around it. Then stick down along the front of the camera as well. The other piece of the velcro the non sticky bit then overlaps from the back to the front of the camera and holds the door on. This also protects your expensive camera in case it falls. Its also useful for blacking out the film window, sticky you just pull the velcro back as wind on the film. hope this is helpful.

These are brilliant Eddie, I think the trees would be my favorite, but then I do have a weakness for trees! The tones are great as well, I like the warmth of it. Are these scans from the negs or scans from the print?

Excellent set… a really authentic aged look about them all which I really like.

    Nice work

Sinead, they are scans from negatives, I change the colour balance slightly to give a toned effect as I would do with a print. this warms them up slightly. In actual printing I nearly tone everything either in Selenium or a light sepia depending on the paper used.

    Hi Eddie,

Initially when I joined up to PI i was a bit snobbish about the LOW-FI section here . . .
But after looking through some of the earlier posts and happening across this one as well
the results here are really good.

Your images here are very nostalgic, well composed and have a great mood to them.

This is my first reply in this section to peoples work but the work in general here has made me take out my AV-1 (Canon)
eventhough it is not classed as a LOW-FI camera.

    well done,
    Alan

Thanks Alan, I always try and use a camera to suit the subject and the Holga while it is a vey cheap camera is capable of really good results with a range of subjects and under certain lighting conditions . Good luck with the AV-1.
