European Eagle Owl, taken at Grove Gardens, Fordstown, Co. Meath. Any criticism or advice for this beginner would be most welcome.

The leaves at the front look a bit over-exposed Rob, but it’s a fascinating shot. I don’t think the owl would thank you for the view of its neck.

There’s one of these in England wot has bred in the last week or two (actually, I guess there must be a pair of them, in that case). On the radio they had a woman who ignored the “Do not walk your dog here” sign. She said, “My dog’s ever so well trained, he won’t hurt the owls”. The warden chappie said, “That’s not quite what we’re worried about; the worst your dog could do to them is get stuck in their throats”.

It looks like the front fence is ever so slightly still in focus and is blurring the shot.

Think there’s an estimate of 50 of these out in the wild in the UK. There’s been a pair breeding on MOD land for years. There’s also supposed to be a pair in Holland that are eating Buzzards!

  She obviously hadn’t a clue about the size of these birds. Magnificent creatures. Another one
of my older shots, when I had even less of a clue than I have now about what I was doing. I must go back
and try to get a better one.

Cheers Steve, glad you like it.

Grove Gardens isn’t too bad actually, though the cages and fences
are a bit of a shame. Good variety of birds, couple of unusual mammals
like ring-tailed lemurs, raccoons, wallabies, etc., and a good selection
of domestic farm animals too. I think they open up again this month
after their Winter closure. Another place that opens up soon is the
Butterfly farm at Straffan which I intend visiting at the earliest opportunity…
