Can you guys live without the viewfinder?
No, and yes. Actually yes. I have a big 6×6 viewfinder. I think all viewfinders on small cameras are pretty crap anyway especially compared to a MF camera. So yes this would fit neatly in the corner of my bag, beside a hasselblad body, 4 lenses, some filters and some film and probably take a decent photo. There was a new firmware out the other day and I think it might be a bit better now than the initial reviews. I think I will get a two lens kit in january.
damien.murphyParticipantDo report back Fintan, keen to hear your experiences if you pick one up in January,
Damien
bingbongbiddleyParticipantI’d be interested in hearing back the report too Fintan if you get one.
Just saw an ad on UTV for the Olympus Pen with Kevin Spacey in it. Didn’t expect that.
Although Panasonic have been advertising the GH1 (I think) for a good while.
The Online Photographer had a comparison between the GF1 and Olympus Pen a few weeks back:
FintanParticipantI think the autofocus speed of the olympus would drive me nuts. EP-2 might be more acceptable though.
damien.murphyParticipantLet me throw a spanner into the works..
GF-1 on rangefinderforum in UK for £600 with the 20mm – http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost-classifieds/showproduct.php/product/19164/limit/recent
No connection to the seller, just being an enabler :)
Damien
FintanParticipantdamien.murphyParticipantAh.. hadn’t checked the pricing on the GF-1.. actually consciously trying not to do that :)
Not much of a deal alright, for some reason I had it in my head these were in and about €900/ 950 with the prime 20mm.. not sure if I’m glad that I know they’re only about 700 quid.. :)
EDIT: just seen that you can pick these up for £669 on warehouse express.. only for the lack of viewfinder, I think I would find it very hard to resist one of these, especially with some nice compact glass with an adapter
Damien
FintanParticipantits sterling and the new price is 699 in the shop he bought it.
so he’s taking a hit of 99 pounds.
probably not enough to be tempting outside the uk, but…….
damien.murphyParticipantHmmm.. also see you can pick these up body-only for £444.
Hopefully they will be a raging success, and the price will drop even further :)
On similar note, I’ve seen the odd vague rumour that Canon is considering entering this segment too.. kind of like a digital canonet, I guess, should they do so..
