Panned motorbike shot

    Not sure where, if anywhere, this belongs so I’m posting it here. C&C appreciated.

    I can see the intent, but it is a bit dodgy to my eye. I’m no expert on photography, and I know even less about motorbikes but it seems to be too fast and furious and loses a lot of detail by that.

    When I look closely all I can really see is the BMW logo.

    ‘Fraid I’m going to second that. Not enough of the bike and rider are sharp.

    Still, it’s a good effort – I’ve never pulled off one of these shots.

    Thank you for the constructive criticism. The lens is fine. It’s the sensor that needs to be cleaned.
    At least I’ve given you something to laugh at, so I suppose I’ve accomplished something…

    My apologies I thought it was the lense…but just be careful then in Post-p about dust particles…

    There’s no post processing on that shot. It’s straight out of the camera.
    If I ever decide to print it I’ll be cleaning it. It’ll probably remain as is though…

    AWESOME shot, don’t mind those flower snappers 8) (although the pan european in the background is disturbing..)

    I love messing with slow shutter speeds and 1/30th sec is a tricky pan handheld, 1/15th is even better for isolating a particular section of the subject in focus ;

    and heres what happens at 1/5th sec :? ;

    Cheers Brendan, glad you like. The ST in the bg is a pity, but what can ya do?
    The 1/5th one is mad. You’re lucky to get anything in focus at that speed :D
    Love the slow speed stuff myself. Here’s one from the phoenix park races taken at 1/60th

    Hey there,
    Good on ya for the panning.
    But this shot, as is, doesn’t really work for me.
    I think it has potential to make a good shot, but needs some fine tuning…

    The front of the bike is sharp enough, but only the BMW logo is almost sharp and the GS is not sharp. It could work if both BMW and GS were sharp…maybe, then the picture would clearly be about the ‘BMW GS’ motorbike. But as is, its not.

    But I’m really dying for the rider to be sharp. And I think this shot is about motorcycling, not the bike. Use one of the upper focus points in your camera to focus on the rider’s eyes and get his head sharp. This will improve the shot ten fold.

    And to make it really stand out, see if you can find a less cluttered backgroud. The parking spaces (I think) in the background are quite distracting. Some plain green hedges, will make the rider and bike jump out.

    Keep it up.

    ps. Brendan – panning at 1/5th is just crazy….

    Colm,

    The second pic is definately the choice shot for me.

    Panning is seriously tricky to get right – I took about 500 shots at the last race day I was at, and only about 5 were any good!! Try to get at a corner, and prefocus – much easier doing it with a slow subject at a corner, than a fast subject on a straight!!
