Parisian Scene Under a Dark Sky
-
achtungbarryParticipant
Taken last September on the Pont au Change Bridge in Paris with the Conciergerie in the background.
I waited on the bridge for about 40 minutes for the right person to walk past and get the shot.
Photomatix processing (love it or hate it :D ) of the single raw to create pseudo hdr and then a bit of photoshop to increase contrast, sharpening etc. I also masked in the woman from a non hdr version of the shot as she had become a bit too noisy.
I know a lot of people hate hdr with a passion but I love the surreal look it gives(if done well). I love surreal looking images. I sometimes find straightforard colour shots to be boring (though not always) hence I use a lot of hdr and textured layers blended with the photo. I guess it’s a personal taste thing. I do however hate those hdrs with all the settings pushed to max and awful looking halos and cartoon like textures.
jb7ParticipantIt looks like you’ve been doing some colouring in-
well done, I know how hard it is to keep everything inside the lines-As a street shot, this fails, I think-
it really is all about the over the top processing-There’s no good light, no action, nothing that would add to my understanding of the human condition,
no humorous or telling juxtopositions, no wit, just a very heavily processed file of somebody pasted into a picture taken on a bridge.Sometimes, nothing happens- I know, it’s boring-
but adding all this bling doesn’t make it more interesting-By the way, point me to where somebody has said they hate HDR-
for every one you find, I’m sure I can find ten who say they love it-brendancullenParticipantAnother excellent capture Barry. Superbly composed using the thirds and a most masterful, delicate & subtle use of the now much loved HDR.
The eye leads satisfyingly throughout the composition and the (masked back in – not painted) walker adds a perfect modicum of movement to compliment the cloud motion – and this then contrasts magnificently with the rigid lines of the bridge and the former royal palace. You patience was rewarded.
The low dramatic cloud mutes the colours on the buildings perfectly – producing a very natural and unprocessed look.
I’m not sure every image needs to have “humour, wit, juxtapositions or add to an understanding of the human condition”. I can’t wait to see samples on here soon.
This is a very very likable capture. If you tried it with a little mahogony box with two holes out front you may have done better – but overall – pretty darn good with one of those digital jobs.
You demonstrate here a complete control over the equipment and processes the 21st century has to offer.
Many happy tone blending days ahead.

Ps – There is a flickr group called “I HATE HDR” – and there are 17 members.

The sky really isn’t a runner – far too processed for my taste.
Finally, there is nothing like enough human interest to warrant comment as a street shot – sorry, them is the rules!
