Hello…this is my first posting but does anyone have a good solution to passport photos and where to get the best UP TO DATE INFO concerning the exact sizes and such?

I did find this software on-line at this site: http://www.onthegosoft.com

that seems to be good but I am hesitant to just assume this works and have people coming back ‘rejected’ as I have heard how strict it is? Is there anyone I can call?

    Thanks Brad

    Hi…

    Info on passport photos:

Two identical photographs of the passport holder must be included with each application. They should be signed on the back by the person who witnesses the application, including the form number shown in Section 9 of the application form. There are strict standards in place governing passport photographs as follows:

Photographs should be not more than 6 months old
They may be in colour or black and white
They should not exceed 35mm X 45mm in size
The photograph should show a full front view of the subject?s head, as he or she would normally appear
The image must be sharp and clear, and taken against a plain white background
Sunglasses are not acceptable . Tinted glasses may be worn provided they do not obscure the person’s eyes
Photographs should not show military or police uniforms
Photographs must be of good clear quality as set out above. Otherwise, they will be unsuitable for inclusion on the passport and will be returned to you.

    Hope it helps…

Maybe get on to the passport office, as there criteria have changed resently with new technology introduction.

The Minimum Photograph size is now 35mm x 45mm and the Maximum photograph size is 38mm x 50mm.

The maximum distance between bottom of chin and top of head (top of crown through the hairline) is 36mm and the minimum distance is 32mm.

    Link to pdf: http://193.178.2.96/uploads/documents/photograph%20guidelines.pdf

    ( from http://www.passport.ie )

They should not exceed 35mm x 45mm is an error on their website ( on this page http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=257 ), but if you follow the link on that same page “Advice for applicants” you get the correct info. What is it about irish goverment websites and outdated/wrong information!!!

I was actually in the passport office on Molesworth St yesterday and saw about 1 in 3 of the people in the queue ahead of me have to get their photos done again in the booth at the other end of the room so they are being quite strict. I was anxious about mine because I’d done them looking at the old regulations and only realised they’d changed the guidelines when I went to the Garda station to get the form signed and the duty Garda said I’d filled in the wrong form. Luckily the pictures were accepted.

The reason for the change is so that they can measure ratio/proportions of eyes/mouths and encode it on the microchip for the US-mandated biometric passports. The only other difference in the form is that the signature is no longer on a sticker that gets included in the issued passport.

Things to watch out for: neutral expression – no big smiles, mouth closed and face directly at the camera. The standard photobooths are generally set up to give a head and shoulders shot, but the restrictions on head size in the frame mean that these may not be accepted.

As dmg said, the correct info is in the two documents linked from the middle of http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=257 especially the “technical advice for photographers”, and not on the page itself!

Another useful website I found. I was too lazy to crop and duplicate etc so I just uploaded my picture to http://www.epassportphoto.com/ and just printed the results from there to a standard shop-printed 6×4. Again, I was lucky that the resulting head size was acceptable as I hadn’t really measured the head before printing, only the total size of the image.

New regulations were sent to all photographers regarding passport photographs last year. They also included an overlay guage to check measurements.

    The following are the requirements;

    1 Photograph must be a maximum size of 38mm x 50mm and a minimum of 35mm x 45mm
Head Height (from the base of chin to the top of the crown through the hairline) must be minimum 32mm and
    maximum 36mm.

2 Photographs must be no more than 6 months old, show a close up of the face and top of shoulders. The face
must take up 70% to 80% of the frame.

3 The head must be centered in the image. A frontal pose looking directly into the camera and showing full face
and taken against a plain white, cream or light grey background. There must be a marked contrast between the
facial features and the background. Rotation or tilting of the head either up or down, left or right is not acceptable

4 The expression must be natural with both eyes open and mouth closed. There must be no hair covering the eyes.
Contrived expressions such as raised eyebrows, squinting or frowning are not acceptable.

5 If glasses are worn they must be of clear glass so that eyes are clearly visable. There cannot be any light reflection
on the lenses of eyeware. Only headgear worn for religious reasons are permitted. Uniforms, civil or military (e.g.
showing epaulettes, insignia) should not be worn.

6 Infants and small children who are unable to support themselves must be photographed lying down. Hands, arms,
etc used to support them must not be visable.

7 The photographs must be sharp and in focus and correctly exposed. There should be no shadows, glare,
ink markings, creases, dirt, cracks, etc on the image or the background.

8 Photographs must have good colour balance and natural flesh tones and no “red eye”.

9 While B&W photographs are prefered colour is also acceptable. Photographs must be printed on high quality paper
at a high resolution and be un-altared or touched up.

10 The reverse of the photograph must be white and unglazed.

I think so ! I got it and all the photographers in our reigon were sent it also, so I’m presuming all photographers got them.

My own photos were rejected twice and the passport office even approved one at their counter that was later rejected by the staff digitising the photo.

There is an info sheet available at your garda station that has a plastic template for you to insert a photo under to see if the dimensions are correct. Get yourself this info sheet.

They are getting more and more strict.

As well as above, photos are rejected if:

there is not a clean and clear white (light grey/cream) all the way around the head and hair. If someone has long hair or “big” hair, they’ll need to tie it back to be sure.
Best to be able to see the neck, things like high roll-neck jumpers tend to get bounced.

Also note that only a 5 degree tilt is allowed accross the eyes and that both ears if not covered by hair must both be visible.
We had one guy in recently that when his eyes were straight his head was tilted and one ear…. …..

    yes you guessed it.
