I finally bit the bullet and bought a PC from Ankermann in Germany. An 18kg box duly arrived by way of UPS and everything worked right out of the box (even though only German power leads were shipped).

The CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 with 2 gigs of RAM. I have not fully investigated the potential yet but it seems to be a flyer. I am in the process of transferring data from my old PC still. I am very happy with my purchase.

Congrats. AMD x2’s are nice. I had a Turion in the laptop from my last job and I recently bought a HP DV9000 witha Turion x2. It runs sweetly.

    For future reference:

Someone mentioned Komplett. If you’ve no problem maintaining the PC for yourself then it’s a great route. My last desktop (last August) was an Intel Duo with 4GB RAM and a decent 256MB gfx card. $1000 or thereabouts. No local seller could come close. The PC runs Windows Vista x64 beautifully.

As Steve mentioned above, gfx cards DO make a difference, e.g. unless you’ve a good one you can’t use the new Aero UI in Windows Vista.

BTW, in this lark we’re all into, Vista mightn’t be a good jump for most for a while. Drivers for 3rd party add-on’s, e.g. printers, cameras, etc, might be slow to come out, if at all. And if you do go Vista, double your RAM.

Is anyone using LCDs from DELL.
How is their performance fo image processing and can they easily be calibrated?

    Two things

    1. dont do vista yet, buddy of mine just upgrade, no drivers for his R1800 printer ARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

    2. Some of the Dell monitors are very nice, I am hoping to get one of the 24″ wide ones, with the video inputs, also it does 1920 *1200 res which is true HD, unlike most ‘HD Ready’ Tvs that only do 1376 768

Flat screens for photography…. it’s a case of you get what you pay for. Most of them (the ones most of us can afford) are useless and you’d be better of with a more economic CRT. I couldn’t use my last work laptop for PP work because it was flatter than the US mid-west. My current laptop is much better (it has “HP Brightview” or something) but I still want to view stuff on CRT.

Steve’s probably got a better view on which TFT models to use.
