Brilliant – this is something I definitely want to try. Have you just converted to mono and toned?
There was a video tutorial on dropping ice cubes into coloured water in this month’s Digital Photo magazine, and it looks reasonably straightforward. I hope to give it a try. I see that using a pear as opposed to an ice cube has caused the glass bowl to wobble. No doubt it also causes a bigger splash of water to clean up afterwards…….
(I know that you can also use a ‘strobe’ effect on a flashgun for additional effects, but I would need to do my homework on that).Ross
MarkKeymasterFlipflipParticipantyeah Id like an aul run through of that too Ali.
Really cool idea for a shot. Well executed too! Fair play.
AliParticipantThanks a mil guys for the feedback. I was just experimenting one of the nights and came up with this – basically it was more of an exercise to get more familiar with my sb800.
Few things done to get to the shot
1. Used a dark background – sb800 positioned to the the left and slightly behind the background.
2. SB800 set up – was remote (triggered by on board flash). Manual – set to 1/64 of total output.
No light metre was used so very much trial and error.
3 Camera was set to manual focus for the centre of the bowl (approx. location where pear would fall).
4. Shutter speed 1/250
5. Adjusted levels in CS2 to make background completely black. Converted to black and white. Inverted and toned.I haven’t played around with FP high speed sync. I’ve been reading a few articles on it – quite interesting debate on how
useful it actually is for certain shots. I’m in two minds whether to just enable it and let it kick in at shutter speeds faster than
the D200s sync speed. Any opinion’s on this?DenverDollParticipantwell here I go talking about something I have no business talking about..lol..
I think this is fantastic :D
I know I can never improve anyone’s technique, so I hope you dont mind me just saying what is really pleasing to me.
It would be so cool to have a series of these..different fruit..different tones..for my kitchen..or my bar even.Sharon
AliParticipantThanks a million Denverdoll – i was actually thinking the same thing and to have the tone biased towards the colour of the fruit. :) Watch this space – thanks a mil for the comments.
DenverDollParticipantoooh..looking forward to that girlie!!
you can pm me for the tones I’d be needing :lol:S-ManMemberThe photo has really nice mood and tones i like it.its very creative
:D :DmgstParticipantGreat shot i love the tones and it has a real advertising look to it.
Mick
GrahamBParticipantFinally got to see this. :D
Very good shot Ali and really well presented.
I see a new series forming here.stcstcMemberAli
I do like this, although i am not fussed on the tone.
Hope you didnt make too much mess with the water
joe_elwayParticipantNice pear, Ali! ;-)
It’s a cool idea and I like the water caught in mid air.
RobMemberClass work Ali, love the toning. Great idea too and really
well executed. How many splashes did it take until you got the
timing right? Or are you that brilliant that you got it in one?Rob.
ExpresbroParticipantOkay…wait for it..
That Pear is a Peach of an image.. 8) 8)
Really imaginative shot Ali…and i agree that it does have a real advertisement feel to it…maybe for some kind of pear flavoured alcoholic drink…
Might get that million yet
