Pentax 645D has arrived

It could potentially be expensive but something to aim for,
Bye Bye to Canon for me.
GizzoParticipantaoluainParticipantYea should be, same mount, just no auto focus
and possibly at a long shot no auto aperture.Should take the old gear which is now more
or less redundant.randomwayMemberWhat will that kit offer over a H3D or a Sinar Hy6? As the article says it is not expected to be an affordable camera to enter the digital medium format ring.
aoluainParticipantEventhough it would be more expensive than the
1 series say from Canon, I would expext it to be
less expensive than the Hassie or Sinar.I think it was always the case with the Pentax
medium format gear.randomwayMemberI’d love it, if that was the case, but this sentence worries me a bit: “We understand that Pentax Japan has decided to aim the camera at the high-end market, so it seems unlikely it will be an affordable, enthusiast-level, model.”
aoluainParticipantWell there is no way it would have been an affordable enthusiast model, they seem
to be aiming their 35mm SLR’s at that market and are only now coming close
to producing a kind of experienced amateur model with the K20D.Medium format was always aimed at the professional, and I maybe corrected
on this but in my opinion Pro Fashion shooters, so Pentax will be aiming there
but whether they can offer advantages in some way over the usual models will#have to
be seen.I notice pentax’s medium format film gear is most often overlooked, they produced some
cracking glass in the 645 and 67 formats over the years, beating the ‘usual gang’ with some
ranges . . .interesting times!
aoluainParticipantHere is some more blurb on the camera . . .
There does seem to be more sites announcing the release for next year, but they all have the same info.

the manual for the soon to be released 645D has gone up on the net!

damien.murphyParticipantHmm.. given the cost, is a digital medium format camera really more effective than film and a humble flatbed..
Just scanned my first frames of 120 on a flatbed, which at a mere 2400dpi gives me a 28 megapixel file..
Main advantage of such a digital set-up would seem to be the ability to preview images, and the time saved in loading film, seeing as 220 has gone the way of the dodo.. am I missing anything ?
Damien
aoluainParticipantWell I think a lot of films have gone the way of the dodo TBH.
Where I see the advantages of this over the film gear is the workflow!
[this is not a digital V’s film debate just the working advantages/disadvantages]I would safely say most if not all Pro medium format shooters are using digital
now purely for the speed of developing images that the client [magazines/advertising etc]
requires is far greater than, developing and scanning film. The end image has to be Digital, these obviously can be e-mailed or transported
more easily and the publisher’s are also working digitally.you dont even need memory cards! just transmit them via IR to the computer/laptop
on site and you get to preview the image’s there and then getting instant feedback
so adjustments can be made to get that perfect shot! you could even have the client there
so then can fine tune to get their image requirements. Now whether the Pentax 645D will have all the accessories is another question.
I wanted to get one of them ir transmitters for the 5D . . . still waiting for the lotto win!

Indeed, alas. I wasn’t thinking of colour, had my b&w goggles on, where there’s some nice emulsions available.
I imagine digital medium format slr’s are the main game in town for colour work these days, even given the expense of digital backs and the like.

Good, I have read enough film-v-digital, and Canon-v-Nikon debates to last a lifetime.. like photography is that narrow a pursuit :)
Interesting you mention workflow, I guess that is where the main advantage would be for commercial/ advertising work. Need to broaden my own mind again, and not assume everyone works at the same slow-ish pace I do when I’m shooting :)
An expensive solution for workflow advantages though, unless digital medium format is the price of entry for the industry you shoot in. I just hope the price of medium format gear drops again ;)

I remember reading of a renowned commercial photographer recently, observing on the whole changeover to digital in commercial/ advertising work, how it used to be the frames after they thought they had the shot in the bag, that often tended to be the most creative, and often best work of the shoot.
As I say, I find the whole area curious/ interesting really

Lol.. I’m sure most photographers probably talk of how clients ruin everything :)
aoluainParticipantHappened across this today . . .
TEASER SITE this is cool it is in a constant state of change until March 11th . . .
On the 10th, Pentax opened a teaser site revealing a new product. Because “Large format sensor” is displayed on the site, it is believed to be the medium format digital camera whose development was resumed in 2009.
The teaser site has, along with the catch phrase “challenging the next dream”, the silhouette of a new camera body. The following text proclaims, “A whole new world drawn by a super high resolution, large format sensor.” Also, from the text “The true power will be unveiled at CP+,” we can see that something about this camera will be announced at the CP+ event at Pacifico Yokohama on March 11.
According to Pentax, the silhouette image will change a few times. Also, on the teaser site, you will be able to subscribe to an e-zine about the new model, and, in addition to offering the latest information, Pentax will mail you a catalog along with the official announcement of the new model.
Additionally, Mr. Toshiyuki Kitazawa, Vice President of Operations and Executive Manager of Development for Hoya Pentax Imaging Systems Division, said in a December 2009 interview that, “I would like to enter the medium format digital market some time in 2010.”
aoluainParticipantMy finall post on this i think !
well after many years of false starts and whisperings
and wonderings it has finally materialised . . .Available from May at about $9400, not bad for a high spec med format
body with many features previously not available on med format bodies.would chop everything in for this if I could afford the difference!!!
the highs for me:
40mp
11 point AF sensor
weather sealed metal body
3 inch display
image sensor cleaningthe low:
image sensor size is 44×33, just a little more than twice the size of an aps-c
sensor.all the specs can be found here > http://www.pentax.jp/english/news/2010/201008.html” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;”

It looks lovely, and not ridiculously expensive (but too expensive for me).
One of my contacts on flickr recently put up a photo of his new s2 (taken with an m9, presumably his too).M
