Im new to this site, and I notice most people use Canon or Nikon cameras, I used to be involved in film photography about 13 yrs ago, and now Ive got the bug again. My gear then were Pentax cameras so im looking to get a starter dslr and im just wondering what do you think of the Pentax k-m or what other Nikon/Canon in the same price/spec range. Thanks.
shutterbugParticipantHi Joe and welcome to the site, there are an enourmous amount of entry level
dslr’s out there all very competitive in their prices, and especially now in the
sales. I dont know anything about Pentax I am a Sony user which I am very
happy with, the best advice I can give is go to a good camera shop and get the
feel of all the different cameras available in your price range, one of them will
fit just right, important when it is going to become part of your hand for hours at
a time. The specs on similarly priced cameras will be much the same some may
have a little extra here and there, but at the end of the day it is you that is going
to use it and it has to feel right to you.Let us know how you get on and your final choice!
cathaldParticipantWelcome Joe there are a few of the guys on here that use pentax so they can give you some advice
There is a bit of a review here http://www.dpreview.com/previews/pentaxkm/
It does look like a beginners entry level dslr but you have said that you used film before so perhaps you might want to go for something with a bit more spec.
Do you still have the film camera?Perhaps the lenses from that will fit the modern pentax dslrCathal
SeaviewParticipantI think the greatest advantage of going with Nikon or Canon is the large range of good value second hand equipment. Some of it can be in perfect condition, I have been very lucky myself buying off this site.
Best of Luck.
Dave.
piusno1MemberWell guys, thanks for all the advice, I decided to get a Nikon D200 instead second hand in Conns. Very happy with It, so its down now, to enjoying photography again, I cant get over how conveient compared to film, digital photography is.
Thanks again, and will be looking up all the good advice ye guys give.
shutterbugParticipantGreat, now get out there and start snapping, post up loads (says she that hasnt posted in
a while !) and most of all enjoy it. :)piusno1MemberI will indeed, have a look at two pics I posted in Street scenes on this website. ive notice 49 views but no comments, I need some, no matter what you say.I need feedback. thanks
jonglesParticipantHi piusno1
Not sure if you’ve gone ahead and bought your camera yet. I was in the same boat as yourself and just bought my first dslr last wkend. I had been interested in a few and had no brand allegiance. I narrowed it down to either the pentax k10 or perhaps k200 or the canon eos 450. However pentax appparently have all but pulled out of ireland and as a result are meant to have little or no customer support. however there is positive news samsung are now collaberating with pentax and they have the samsung gx10 which is apart from a few aesthetic differences the exact same camera as the pentax. In the end its what i went for and so far I’m very pleased but I am only a beginner so i’m no pro when it comes to d slrs.its price is very attractive 450 euro with a double lens kit . But what might be of more interest to yourself is the fact that it has the k mount system for its lenses and if you still have old lenses in your posession theres a good chanec they’ll work. Pentax to the best of my knowledge haven’t changed their mount since the 70s.honest i don’t work for samsung just something to throw in to the mix, seems canon and nikon seem to have more then just sony to worry about ! i included a link to a review below.
