Some time ago I started a series, People I Meet at Work, my thinking behind it was it might help overcome my shyness and uncomfortableness about approaching people and asking to do a portrait. I’m also very lucky to have a job that allows me to meet a lot of different people, some I see again and again and some I might only meet once.

It’s been a full year since I’ve taken a portrait, felt good to get going again…

Be interested to here any thoughts or comments on these.

And something a bit different with this one. Little bit of texture added.

    Hi Sinead,

Good to see you picking this up again and I think they are a nice series of photographs.

I had a couple of thoughts when I viewed them.

The subject has a lovely relaxed pose in #1 and I like the fact that he is looking into the lens.
The OOF portion of the wall grabs my attention.
I wondered why this was as it is often good to have the background blurred in Portraits.
I then noticed that only half of the background wall is blurred and maybe this is what is
causing my attention to be distracted away from the main subject.

No such issues with #2 as the background focus is uniform.
Also a nice relaxed pose but maybe the head on viewpoint is not as strong composition
wise as the angled view in #1.

#3 is very similar to #1 and the wall focus is the same.
The pose dosen’t seem quite as relaxed.
I often have problems with subjects doing strange things with their mouths when I point
    a camera at them.

#4 is the least effective photograph for me.
I have the wall focus issue and the subject is looking off elsewhere which is not always
a bad thing but I am comparing it with the images above.
I also think the lovely subdued colour in the other three is better.

A really good set of photographs and the comments are just my inexpert thoughts.

    Cheers,
    John.

Really nice shots Sinead, although I agree that the unusual OOF area on some of them is a little distracting.

I take it from the angle that these are from the Mamiya? Glad to see it’s still giving you great results.

I really like the wall backdrop….it gives a great sense of depth..and likewise the model looks great…fantastic “attitude”.

    cheers

Thanks boys for the comments, quite out of practice, so the feedback is good and much appreciated.

John – I get what your saying about the bokeh and agree, it is distracting.
There was another version of the second shot, stronger composition as Owen was filling the frame better, but I somehow managed to damage the frame, some kinda weird double exposure :(

He was laughing at me in the third… I really need to get a grip of myself sometimes. Need to just relax a bit, portraits are not comfortable for me.

I wouldn’t say your thoughts are in any way inexpert. They’ve been helpful. Thank you.

Robbie – I’m rusty! Yep, all from the Mamiya, nice to be using it again, and if I’m totally honest, I was just pleased I managed to expose the roll correctly! Initially anyway, then I was hopeful for a keeper.
Really nice bloke, we’ve been in touch since, so I’m hoping maybe I’ll get a chance to shoot him again.

    Cheers for the feedback!

I like the last one. Seems so different from the first ones for some reason. Very nice feeling to it anyway. Well done!
