Brian – I was at the races too and I didn’t get any shots like that. They look great – can you give any tips as I have just started photography myself.

In a discussion on panning on another forum, I posted some shots I took on the day of the races myself. So I decided to post mine here too.
How to pan:
1. Make sure your camera is on continuous focus, so it can track the movement of the car. If your camera can’t continuously focus, prefocus on the distance you are from the car.
2. Select a relatively slow shutter speed. This will allow you to have a blurred background
3. Focus on the car as it approaches. As it passes by, continue to pan the camera with the car
4. Click the shutter, but don’t stop panning the camera
It takes a while to get it right, but the goal is a pin sharp car and a blurred background, which helps to convey motion.
And of course.. what would it be without a head shot from me? :)
Excelant shots Ciaran were they taken with the D2X?
Was dreaming of up grading from the D2H to the x but did not hear good reports about its sport capablities
Both taken on the D2X and using the 80-400mm lens. I’m no sports shooter, but I couldn’t fault it on the day. At 8fps and super fast focusing, where can you go wrong? OK, the lens I used on the day is a bit slow to focus, but if you’re not changing the focal length all the time the focusing was perfect. If you want to try it out on a day in Mondello, just invite me down ;)
