Came across this on another board. The author writes for Black & White magazine. Try get a few minutes to read it all, its worth while. As this is the critique section i thought it best to post here. I think we can all learn something from it and also have a laugh.
Yes, I enjoyed those threads, lol.
However what I would say, is that whether a photograph appeals or not, is a matter of individual taste. People are entitled to say “that doesn’t work for me” or suchlike. Just because an image was taken by a so-called “Master” does not mean that we all have to like it……but what it does mean, is that what you see in the image was meant to be there, or in other words, you can assume that the photographer intended it to look the way that it does.
That link has the time someone posted a cartier bresson pic in a flickr group and the responses were quite funny. I think a lot of that rings true – how many times have you seen people criticise in a blase off hand kind of manner some aspect of a picture that not only was intentional but wasnt easy ! bugs the hell out of me anyway.
