Photo display sites??
-
AsterixParticipant
Hi all,
Was wondering what is the best site to display your photos and the least expensive…….had photos on photobucket for a while until i noticed anyone could copy my photos. are there free hosting sites which are also copy writed?
CheersTaraMemberHi Asterix!!
I’m a huge huge fan of flickr.com, you can get a free account with them to start off and then I’d advise to move on to a pro account for about $30 per annum and you can upload up to 2gb a month!!
I think lots of people on this forum use flickr……….
Cheers
Tara

richiehatchMemberI use pBase… its 23 dollars/?18 a year for 400mbs…. The nice thing is that ye get a lot of hits on it as its so massive and popular… i also like the way that you can change the way your gallery looks…! I never had any problems with it and the amount of storage is more than enough (for me anyway)..! I have over 1200 images on my site and am only half full!
Regards
Richie
RobMemberI’d be with Richie on this one. I’m also a pBase user and I prefer the way it looks to Flickr, so much easier to navigate and much better looking.
Rob.
ThorstenMemberAnother happy PBase user here. I still can’t understand the attraction behind Flickr although it does seem to be hugely popular. However, as a dial up user I’ve never come across a Flickr page that has loaded satsifactorily for me and it seems to take forever – because of that I simply don’t bother looking at users Flickr galleries (much as I would love to view some peoples work here). PBase on the other hand loads up really fast. It’s got a great interface and with a bit of clever CSS tinkering, you can change the look of it so dramatically that it no longer looks like a PBase hosted page – for more on this useful and powerful feature along with some examples, take a look at http://pbasewiki.srijith.net/
AsterixParticipantcheers for the advice lads, but with flickr.com & pbase where you pay an annual fee are your photos protected?
MarkKeymasterUnfortunately, no photograph online is protected. There is absolutely nothing to stop someone from taken a photograph.
However depending on the size of the image you upload, they probably won’t be able print.Mark
SteveDParticipantI am going to start putting a VERY faint watermark across my photos. Someone on deviantart recently uploaded one of my low-res files and claimed they took the photograph.
SteveFEMemberFor me the attraction with Flickr is it’s the biggest photo club in the world. The social end of it, if you wish it to be, is phenomenal. Millions of groups, whether oriented by geography, inclination or whatever, and vast amounts of discussion, critique, you name it. Many of my contacts I’d be glad to call friends, we interact so much, albeit in the virtual sphere (I have met a couple in the flesh too).
Magazine picture eds are also taking notice, as it’s such a global phenomenon. Using the tags (keywords) they can easily find pics of just about anywhere in the world or anything under the sun. My pics are all displayed under a CC licence, which doesn’t stop people ripping them, but I have had several requests for use, including one that paid out a tidy sum for a single photo.
Brian_CParticipantI’m with pbase and find really easy to use and as richie said above you can change the appearance of the galleries. I started to set up a flickr account but got “browned-off” setting it all up. Found it a real chore having to set up a yahoo account first. Pbase for me.

Same feeling here. I think getting mixed up with Yahoo was a really bad move on Flickr’s part. There is something about the whole Yahoo interface that I just HATE.
ShaGerMemberAnybody using Fotopic.net? Very easy to use, free (250Mb). Get an address like “www.yourname.fotopic.net”. Easy gallery view, backgroud view, settings etc. changability. Easier to setup and use than Flickr. I’ve about 20 folders in it at the moment (approx. 500 photos) and only 20% of my free quota used. Copywright featurs etc.

I too like this about Flickr and use it a lot. The site is a combination of a photo hosting site and a discussion forum like this one where the two aspects are intricately linked. The community aspect has also helped me easily find different techniques and styles to try and it’s simple to keep tabs on new photos from my contacts using Firefox add ons such as Flickrfox.
http://philmccluskey.com/projects/flickrfox/Flickr is not perfect however and I think the user interface can be a bit overwhelming for new users. Also, there are a few desirable features missing like large size slide shows and allowing guests to view hidden “friends and family” photos without having to sign up for a Yahoo account. (Although Flickr staff say both of these features are in the pipeline). In addition the “photostream” concept where photos are displayed on your home page last one first means it is difficult to customize but the flip side is that there is always something fresh shown I suppose.
About security, once a photo on the Internet is viewable on a screen, then it can be downloaded. Flickr do give you the option to overlay a 1×1 pixel on top of your photo so if someone does a right click | Save Image as, they will only get the 1×1 pixel but anyone who really wanted your photo can easily take a screen dump or find the photo in their cache. if you really want security don’t upload it anywhere on the Internet.
rymusMemberDave, wheres the option in flickr to overlay the 1×1 pixel? Haven’t had a very good look around gamma yet but have never seen this option
CianMcLiamParticipantI’m using smugmug, http://www.smugmug.com, there’s no limit on storage space and you get plenty of bandwidth plus you can completely transform the basic site into almost anything you like. Mine still looks like a photo sharing site but to the casual visitor it just looks like any other website, the only branding is a tiny link at the bottom and a mention in the title bar. Its something like $99 for the pro account I use which lets you do pretty much whatever you like with your site plus they will let you set prices and sell prints (mostly targeted at US customers) though you cant choose which company to print the orders which is why I dont use that service. You also can use your own url, mine is http://www.shadowsandstone.com.
You could also look at http://www.exposuremanager.com, very similar features to smugmug except they can take orders and payment and you send out the prints if you prefer. I am thinking of migrating over here when I get the time for this feature. No need to use paypal or cheques to sell prints!
