Photo Wall – Some help/tips needed.

    Hi there,
I want to set up a photo wall in our house but I don’t want to fill the wall full of holes from
nails/screws etc. Has anyone there done anything like this before and if so have you
used and “picture hanging systems” or other creative solutions.

Any thoughts, comments, advice appreciated. Also if you could post some photos of how you did it
    that would be great too.

    thanks,
    Martin.

Martin – I find the low tec option works grand – standard picture hooks are grand for most picture frames in plasterboard

if you need to move them you can just fill the holes with polyfiller sand them down and paint over them.

If you have something heavy to hang you can use plasterboard screws link below and just screw the screw a large picture hook into the plasterboard screw. Before you go making holes in your wall check to see if you have any spare paint for the wall – this will dictate just how careful you need to be !

“you cant make and omelette without breaking a view eggs” and I have broken a few eggs in my time !
every home needs a box of pollyfiller!

    Martin,

You don’t say how big or heavy the frames are, but if you talking about small A4 type size frames that aren’t too heavy you might want to consider looking at 3M’s Command Strips like these: http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Command/home/us_en/products/picture_hangers/

They just stick to the wall, are easy to remove and don’t need any nails or leave any holes. You should be able to find them easily in the likes of Woodies or even Superquinn.

However if the frames are in any way big or valuable then I’d go with gaffo’s suggestion. I have a mix of command strips and plasterboard screws myself depending on the weight of the frames.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

    Hi Martin,

Not sure if you meat a wall where you intended to hang framed photos, or a wall to be used for judging/ evaluating unframed prints over a period of time. Upon hearing of the idea of the latter in the past, I was quite enamoured with the idea of ‘living’ with images over a period of time in which to better absorb them, and ultimately decide which are the most favoured/ powerful images.

To realise the latter, I recently bought several packs of cork tiles (1′ x 1′), which I painted white to blend in with my white walls, and with double-sided sticky back pads now have parts of 3 walls in my apartment covered in cork. I plan to use these walls to tack up work/ proof prints, and ultimately ‘live’ with the images I shoot. Many famous photographers I’ve heard do the same, and I’m looking forward to being exposed to images over a prolonged period of time, at different times of day, differing light and different frames of mind.

In any case, I’ve rambled a bit here, but you probably get the idea.

For what its worth, were I doing it again in a non-rented place I would consider metal panels and the use of small magnets to affix images, in place of cork and tacks.

    Hi Everyone,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Some interesting options there for me to explore.
I have loads of photos sitting on hard drives etc that I just want to start printing
out and displaying. Some framed, some just on mount boards.
    Thanks again for your suggestions.
    Martin.

get them up on the wall – I use my home office as a testing ground for my pics in frames

Ikea do resonable frames to get started with although there are not great comared to the “real thing”

see link below for what I think is a great photo wall borrowed – from http://thefamilyphotojournalist.blogspot.com” onclick=”window.open(this.href);return false;)

You could also consider something like these from Ikea – they both come in different lengths :

    or

(use with clips for unmounted prints)

Thanks once again to everyone. I knew I could rely on the PI members to
    come up with good info.
    Martin.
